My 2.5 year old daughter came home today from school with a 101.5 fever. We gave her Motrin and she perked up. 2 hours later the fever is back with a vengeance (104) and she's a cranky mess. Seems so uncomfortable and sick, poor thing. We have a brand new baby (5 days old) and I'm worried sick about her getting a fever. The doctors advice was to wash hands, keep them separate and do our best. Any other tips? Id feel awful leaving her at home while I left with the baby (at an already tough transitional week!) help!

Gosh. For starters, if my 2 year old had a 104 fever, I think I'd go to urgent care. I was close at 103.5 when she was starting to act lathargic, but she did a quick 180 and perked back up.
Now, about keeping the newborn healthy...so hard! I'd definitely be careful about changing your shirts too, when going between the two of them. I don't have any other advice, good luck --I hope it passes soon!!

Ugh, this same thing happened to me in January. Besides constant hand washing, I tried to change clothes between touching them, wipe handles, etc. Obviously, try to keep them apart (so hard!). I know how stressed and worried you must be about both of them, on top of the normal newborn toughness. Hang in there!

@SweetCaroline: I know! My thoughts too but the ped seemed ok with meds and a warm bath. Thanks for the advice about shirts. Off to change now!

Are you nursing at all? If so, your immune system will help. I recommend upping your fluids and vitamin c and wearing the newborn as much as possible. That way the baby is comforted and you can focus on your toddler. Hand washing and showering help. I also recommend not stressing. The baby has already been exposed, so there's nothing you can do.
Do you have family close by that can help? It seems really challenging to have a newborn and a sick kid.

Have a separate space set up for your newborn in your room and keep the baby quarantined. Play mat, bouncer, RNP, whatever. You may just need to set the baby down and have them cry while you tend to the toddler - they will be okay tho!
The toddler, set them up in the living room, and just keep them comfortable and away from the baby. I would keep hand sanitizer nearby everywhere especially if she is still in diapers. Lysol wipe everything you can and don't nurse or do anything with the baby unless you have washed hands or sanitized. I might even wipe your nipples down before feedings too. Have your husband do any night wakings with the toddler.
We had a newborn and a toddler with raging HMF Disease we had to keep them physically separate for 3 weeks and it sucked badly but our newborn avoided getting it!

We had so many illnesses from my older daughter when the baby came home. If you are breastfeeding, I do think that will help a lot. I also tried to keep them separate when I could. Netflix streaming helped a lot- 5)3 2.5 yo would just watch one episode right into the next. I had specialty towels and blankets for her to lay on on the couch that I washed at night.
We went through the ringer with sick toddler when my younger one was tiny and the only actual sickness she got was conjunctivitis, which my older one never had.
