If you have more than one child and one is sick, do you take them both to the dr for sick visits in case they're both sick and need meds? Both Alice and Blake (3 months) have had cold-like symptoms this week, but no fever anytime I've checked. Alice woke up with a huge lump under her ear which I assume is a swollen gland. I'm calling the dr at 8 am when they open, but I'm curious what others do. Would you take the other baby in case she has an ear infection or something that would require medicine so he can get checked out at the same time? Or do you just take a wait and see approach and make an appt for baby 2 if needed. I'm assuming any illness one gets the other will get as well, but I guess it's not guaranteed. Let me know what you usually do!

So these are twins, right? What I've done if I know one is sick and suspect the other may be getting sick is I take them both but only make the appointment for one. Our pediatrician is so awesome, she'll just do a quick check of the other to be sure, since they're both there but won't charge me for two visits.

@twodoghouse: Good luck! It is so frustrating when one gets sick and you just know that the other will get it. It doesn't always happen that way in our house, but it has often enough. And unfortunately, it's staggered so it doubles the time that DH or I will be out of work to take care of them. This is one of the many reasons we love our pediatrician so much. She totally gets our predicament with twins and how they're both going through the germy, virus stage of the first two years of life. When I've gone there with one sick kid and let her know that I think the other is a few days behind to follow, she's given me a prescription to hold onto for the second child just in case, so that we don't need to double back to her office quite as often. 9 times out of 10, I end up not needing it (I'm anti antibiotics unless absolutely necessary), but it's SO reassuring to have it JUST IN CASE.

I don't have twins, but my kids do a great job at sharing germs. I've never asked, but my ped has checked out more than one kid when we are suspecting strep or an ear infection (or even the one time we thought it might be chicken pox).

@sunshineandsushi: This is our first "illness" so I'm just paranoid right now and going with the assumption that if one's sick they're both sick! I SAH so at least in the future I can hypothetically handle all this on my own but DH is going to come home today to go to the appt with me. Still not totally comfortable handling both in public by myself!
@MamaBehr: that's so nice your ped does that. I think our regular dr would be ok with checking Blake out but she's booked today so another ped will see them. And of course the grouchy lady on the phone said if we want to have Blake looked at we needed two appointments.

@twodoghouse: It just depends on the situation. If I'm pretty sure I know what it is and that it's viral, like when they got Hand Foot Mouth, I just took in one to confirm my suspicion. If they're both acting sickly and I'm not positive what's going on or I suspect some kind of infection, I take them both. I'd rather pay the extra co-pay and do it all at once than have to go back in 2 days when the other one is inevitably equally as sick.
