Do you count signs in your LO's word count? If so, do you happen to know why they are counted? Is it just because it's a way of expressing his/her self?

I definitely think signs count, because it's definitely communication. But for example I told the pediatrician that LO had only X number of words, but X number of signs. LO is in EI and they count both.

@jhd: That's how I've always communicated it to our pediatrician as well. I was just reading conflicting articles (and posts) about whether signs count.

I will 100% count ASL words as words. We will count it because it is a language like any other, simple as that.

Same as jhd. They count as words but I categorize them as spoken words and signs.

Yep! As a mom and as a speech therapist, I count them as words. It's attaching a label/word to a concept or thing, so whether it's spoken or signed it's a word.

Little bit of a thread Jack but does it also count if it's just the first syllable of a word? Like he will say Duh for duck. It's very clear to us and very different than when he says Doh for dog. @Mrs. Oatmeal:
