The gasping for air could be sleep apnea as opposed to silent reflux.

@coacheswife123: Me too. ((Hugs)) but the not waking up is a good thing! My LO cries when she wakes. And usually, she only gets a 45min to 1.5 hour stretch of sleep at a time at night. It has been a long and sleepless 6 months.

@coacheswife123: sounds like it could be a growth spurt! Let us know what your Ped says. . . Wishing you both a healthy, uneventful exam!

@coacheswife123: my LO has reflux/GERD (Sandifer's) and he does the choking while asleep thing. He will be sleeping fine and all of a sudden start choking and gasp while doing so then go back to sleep. Sometimes it cause him to sit up while gasping. I've brought up apnea many times as I had it as a child and doctors always conclude it's reflux related. I second the pediatric GI suggestion. We see one and he has been amazing did LO's care.

FWIW LO's reflux wasn't diagnosed until 8 weeks. I complained from day one but because he was gaining well our pedi didn't think he had reflux even with all the projectile vomit. One pedi gave me Zantac to shut me up at his 2 month appointment and not even a week later we were back in office with bloody stools (she also didn't believe food allergies). We saw another pedi who immediately confirmed reflux and started seeing pedi GI the following week. Be persistent for answers! Good luck!

I think lo's stomach should be pretty much empty by 2 hours after. Reflux starts happening immediately, but is definitely worse when the tummy is full. We did an upper GI on lo (he drinks barium while under X-ray) and it was amazing to see the liquid just go up and down, up and down.

Curious to see what your ped says!

@coacheswife123: Good! FWIW, Zantac did not work for my son, so persist if you don't see improvement. He wasn't much of a spitter until around 4 months, but would arch and get mad and was clearly not comfortable during feedings. Prilosec did the trick, though!

@coacheswife123: I am going through the same thing with my LO and he almost always has very gurgly breathing. He went on Zantac which helped the reflux but not the wet breathing. He has to have a bronchoscopy next week where they put a scope through his nose and down the airway, and they believe he just has "soft" airways which for some babies can take a full year to firm up. Its called loringo malecia or something like that. It's nothing dangerous but they want to do the bronchoscopy just to make sure. The choking has always scared me.. It's like he's choking on mucus but he always ends up swallowing it. Just wanted to let you know that I'm going through something very similar and I hope the Zantac helps!

@MsLipGloss: We didn't figure out that he needed Prilosec until 4.5 months.....and he just weaned at 9 months and is doing great! I'm glad you found something that works foryou!

@coacheswife123: I give him Zantac first thing in the morning after he eats and just shoot it into the back side of his cheek and hold him up and sway him around until he swallows it. He gets his next dose before I feed him prior to bedtime. I found that these are the times when he is calmest and the least likely to spit it out. My ped said it doesn't matter if you give before or after a meal... Just try to space it out every 12 hours and it will always be in his system.

We were on Prilosec, now Prevacid. I give it to him mixed with 15-30mls of milk at the beginning of a feeding to dilute it.
