I need to get our dog out of our bed at night....has anyone had any luck with this? We have tried the garage but he howls all night, same with the living room...(crated and uncrated) and he hates the dog bed we have in our room! The dog just has be in close proximity to DH when he is home! Ahhh!

@autumnlove: Oh girl, I feel your pain. We have two that are in our bed. This started because the one would howl if we left her in her crate or if we left her alone in the house to wander, she would pee everywhere. They're still in our bed.... I'm sorry I'm no help but I do understand what you're going through. I told my husband - NO ONE else sleeps with us! We will not be co-sleeping b/c we already have two kids in our bed with us!!

@mediagirl: This dog will only sleep on MY side of the bed and hogs up all my leg room. He also makes a ton of noises (maybe he is dreaming) when he sleeps and he licks his lips A LOT which always wakes me up!! I hope he gets attached to LO and sleeps in her room eventually.... lol

We actually have two medium sized crates in our master bedroom, one for each dog. At night they get in their beds and we shut the doors to their crates but they are still able to be in the room with us. It is rare that they wake us up needing to potty or are sick but usually they'll pace a little or something and wake us on the rare occasion it happens. It may take a week or so for your dog to accept that they now sleep in a crate but at least they are with you and you can reassure them that you are there.

have you tried having him in a crate next to your bed? i think it would help if he could see you guys. we kicked one of our dogs out of our bed. first we just tied him to the bedroom door so he could see us but couldn't jump up (we made sure he couldn't choke or get tangled on his leash). eventually he got the picture and we could leave him untied and he wouldn't jump up. once in awhile he would try but we would just tell him "off" and he would jump off. hopefully something like that works!

ohh we went through this about a year ago. we put the dog bed next to DH's side, and it took several nights of not sleeping very well - every time he hopped up, we had to be firm and say get down, "no!". when he got down, LOTS of praise. DH kept his hand dangling near the dog's bed so the dog could still be near him.
it took a couple weeks but was SO worth it!!

We had this issue too. We bought him a REALLY nice fluffly dog bed and made a big show of it when we brought it home. We took him over to the bed and got him to lie down in it and we gave him treats in the bed. We got him snuggled in at night time and then we got in bed. It took about 4 nights of hubs having to wake up a few times when the pup would jump on the bed but he would just say "no", and make the pup get back in his own bed. After a few nights he caught on and now he happily sleeps in his bed every night. Hubs is out of town and last night I tried to get the pup to snuggle in the big bed with me and he wouldn't get out of his own bed!

@autumnlove: I have this same issue- and he LOVES my side of the bed, Theo is a rescue and I think because he spent some time in some not so nice conditions that he loves snuggling. We have tried relocating him by picking him up (and he isn't a small guy) and put him in our guest room a few times but he always manages to make his way back to our bed quickly. we tried the dog bed next our bed, but he isn't interested. I don't want to crate him because I don't know how long he was confined to a crate previously. On top of it all he is deaf so it's even trickier.

Good luck, I refused to let our dog (130# newfie) get in the habit of sleeping in our bed. Now that she isn't crated at night, she sleeps either on the heating/AC vent in our room or more recently she has been sleeping on the floor at the foot of my side. We did have two cats who slept with us but that got too much for me (and they were my cats from before marriage), we just locked them out of the room and it seemed to solve the problem.
It is possible the dog doesn't like the bed you selected. Our dog has hated every dog bed/pillow we have gotten for her.

Our dog used to sleep on our bed but because of DH's allergies, we had to stop that. We just had to tell her a firm 'no' when she tried to go up on the bed. After a couple weeks, she doesn't even attempt to get up on the bed. We got her a nice dog bed. We do tease/ test her by patting the bed to try to get her to come on the bed, but she's a good dog and doesn't.
It's so nice to have the bed to ourselves.

If crating him doesn't work, I'm with @purrpletulips - maybe he doesn't like his bed.
Our dog also didn't like the first bed we bought for him and he never really liked his crate, but we tried another bed that was cozier, placed it next to our bed, and it totally worked! (He used to sleep in our bed.) He didn't love it at first, but every night we would put a t-shirt I had worn the night before in his bed so he could smell my scent and feel more comfortable. It took a week or so of whining but he finally realized he wasn't welcome in our bed anymore. Now he LOVES his bed! Good luck!

Awww.... your poor dog just likes some snuggling! I understand though, we have a 65 pound dog so he's never been allowed to sleep with us. Luckily he's fine on the couch. Good luck!

Day 2 of no dog in the bed! We had to tell him no and put him back on the floor each time he jumped up. Eventually, he got the hint or was too tired to jump back up!
