A friend called me in tears about her 12 month old, she has apparently been really struggling with sleep training but I am at a loss of what to suggest so I was hoping someone here could offer an idea or two.

They have been letting him cio since 5 months, it used to be that he would cry for a minute or two, then play for a bit, grump for a few minutes and then fall asleep, the whole process taking about 15-20 minutes. Over the past 6 weeks though it has gotten worse apparently, she said he now just cries for over an hour but also won't fall asleep any other way (rocking, stroller, car, baby wearing).

She said the routine has stayed the same, she has tried the whole same time everyday thing and watching for tired cues, putting him down at first sign or at the brink of exhaustion and none work, it takes over an hour no matter what.

He still takes two naps unless the morning one runs super long for some reason.

At what point do they learn to fall asleep without the crying and is there a way to facilitate that? Thanks for any ideas you might have!
