We have a playroom and it's roughly set up so that all of his toys that are not baby safe are on one side of the room. That gives us some separation so that if the baby is heading to that side of the room we can catch her before she gets there. But she's only crawling now, so we'll see how that changes as she gets faster.

We also employ baby jail. We can put A in the baby jail if we need to step out of the room, or we've also used it specifically to block off the lego area. We just converted our never used train table into a lego table and all the legos have to stay on the table.

Besides the suggestions you've already gotten, you can start now on being very firm about picking up his small toys. Remind him to pick up the lego pieces as soon as he's moving on to play something else, or if he's leaving the room. If it doesn't happen, take the pieces you have to pick up for him away for awhile.

I'm trying this now with my older DDs in hopes that their toys disappearing will be motivation for them to keep cleaned up when baby sis starts crawling. I don't expect them to REALLY understand that the parts could hurt her, but having things taken away if they don't pick them up resonates.

I only have one LO right now (and he's only using Duplos), so I can't say it works, but maybe it would help him keep things in one space and help him see when pieces are straying from the area? Also, easy clean up when he's done playing.

I agree. It's impossible. and why do girls Lego sets have such small pieces? At one point, I even asked my pediatrician what would happen if baby swallowed Lego..hypothetically of course

Some things we did to help limit the Lego eating...
My husband took our old IKEA changing table, cut down the legs, and made a Lego table. It's tall so my soon 5 year old stands and plays with it. It has wheels so she pulls it in and out of playroom. Baby can't reach much.

And also, my older one knows to be on the lookout for "small things" that can get in her brothers mouth. She does a pretty good job of helping

it's rough. mine are 3 years apart and we tried to put off small legos for a while. I guess I gave in last summer when he was 1.5 and she was 4.5. she doesn't like him destroying things so that helped - she pretty much does small legos during his nap with me so I can control it. I also make her do it at the kitchen table, and we keep larger plastic tupperware to put the pieces, books and finished products in. that way it's fast to clean up when he wakes up and I put those in her room which is behind a gate.

actually if you can gate off the oldest one's room that's the biggest help. I can let her keep a lot of stuff in there that he can't touch or she wouldn't want him to. the way our house is set up the gate also protects the master bedroom and the front door (it's a ranch).

the most recent thing he put in his mouth was a shopkin so it's always something! those are even worse because they look like candy - I think that's why he tried it!
