A thread earlier asked if we knew anybody who changed their first name and it made me think about our babies.
How would you feel if your LO wanted to change their first name when they were adults?
I'd be pretty bummed. We put a lot of thought and discussion into picking out the name for her.

We picked a family name, so I would be a little upset and would hope that at least she picked something meaningful.

I would be sad, but you know it's her decision in the end and she has to live with it. But hopefully she loves it as much as we do!

i would be bummed! we discussed his name alot and tried to pick one he would love nad would fit him. we also tried for find a name that was unique and not common but not to out there so it took a lot of effort (Esp since me and my hubby have kinda differnet naming tastes!) but i understnad that it is HIS name and he has to like it to, so if he abosolutely hated it, i i would be supportative but a little broken hearted to see him change it!

I would be sad but if my daughters really hated their names then I would rather they make the change and be happy. It's only a name. But hopefully they are not changing it to something outlandish like... The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. LOL.

I remember when I was about 10, I told my mom I wished I had a different name. I wanted to be Katrina instead of Charlene. She was pretty angry but probably more hurt at the time. Oops...

Id be a little upset. She's named for dhs great grandma so it would hurt a bit. I'd hope she would just ask to be called something else and not actually change it.

I don't have kids so the answer might change but for right now I wouldn't care. There are no family or sentimental names on my list and they are pretty unique so it wouldn't bug me. I've wanted to change my name a couple times.

I would be pretty upset. We named our daughter a pretty normal name that isn't super popular. I wouldn't mind too much if she wanted to go by her middle but, I'd hate it if she changed it completely.

I remember going through a phase in elementary school where my BFF and I wanted to change our names and were very verbal about it to our parents. We were 7 years old though, and it was an imaginative play sort of thing.
But if my kids seriously thought of legally changing their names as adults, I'd be sad... They have the right to, of course, but I'd definitely be sad. They'll always be what we named to me though!

@mrbee: haha, yes, considering I was 10 years old at the time, it was 1990 and waaaaay before hurricane Katrina!!

I would be sad of course. I would probably try to talk to them to understand WHY they wanted to change their name. Are they having an identity issue that's something a whole lot bigger than just a name? Do they get teased for the name for some reason? Do they just feel it doesn't suit them and the person they've become? As long as there wasn't a larger more concerning problem going on, then I would be supportive of the change. I want my children to be happy.

I'd be sad and disappointed (since I love her name, of course) but if she really felt strongly, would respect and support her decision.
