First, is there a different between sofa and couch? Different words for the same thing?
Anyway, what material do you prefer for your furniture? Pros and cons?
DH and I are trying to decide between leather and microfiber right now. I like both

I do not like leather, especially for a couch that I want to cozy up on when I'm not feeling well (sticking to the couch is no bueno).

We prefer leather but that's also because we have a dog that sheds. His hair would permanently embed in anything else! With leather, it comes right off.

@LindsayInNY: Do his nails scratch it up at all?
@runsyellowlites: Yeah, that's DH's problem. We inherited SIL's leather couch while they were in between houses for 3 weeks, and whenever he would sit on it he would put a blanket over the whole couch. Needless to say, that didn't look very nice to have random blankets on it all the time!

They mean the same, but I tend to say living room sofa and family room couch.
I grew up with leather in the family room. We had a dog. After the initial cold when I first sat down leather was quite comfy.
We have microfiber and our couch is super comfy. We keep a stain remover spray for stray food stains.
Our living room sofa is an initially prickly fabric, but once settled in the sofa is comfy too.

@swurlygurl: Not that I know of? He's indoor trained so doesn't go out as often as a "normal" dog would. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. We're getting a new couch that's nicer and I'm hesitant to let him jump up on it!

Like @LindsayInNY: I love our leather couch for ease of wiping dog fur, and anything else, off. My dog isn't *allowed* on the couch, but of course if he is hanging out while we are out, he definitely jumps on it sometimes-- although he doesn't like the leather so much so usually he only lays on there if we leave a blanket or sweater up there.
I agree with the cold or sticky issue-- to be honest I probably wouldn't have chosen a leather couch but DH already had them when we moved in together. Now I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me, but when I want to cozy up on the couch I always want a blanket, no matter the material of the couch.
And I think sofa is just a fancier way to say couch

Leather will make your life a whole lot easier with a baby/toddler. You can always add a throw to make it more cozy.

We do currently have leather couches that were given to us as a wedding "gift" (it was FIL "old" set as they were upgrading). Needless to say the 8, well now 9, year old animal of a boy we have has destroyed it (mostly running & jumping to sit/lay on it & the button my jean pockets snagging more that one cushion) & the couch cushions now live with a like colored sheet around them until we care to get new ones (not really something I care to spend money on while the munchkins are little).
I'm pretty sure our next will be microfiber.

Our LO has spit up several times on our leather couch and each time it happens I am so glad we have leather.

I loathe microfiber, but I like how it cleans up, so we have that in our family room.
I have linen in my sitting room.

@looch: Why do you hate it? The big con to me (which is silly, I know) is that I think it looks messy all the time because all the fabric is going different ways so it's different colors. I would be smoothing the fabric for the rest of my life...

@swurlygurl: exactly the reason! I hated seeing my sons handprints on the couch, drive me insane!!

We have microfiber...if you have a child who spits up do not get this. Even with the stain protector we have disgusting stains all over it from when she spit up breastmilk and formula. I loved our couch for comfort but it is so unpractical with a baby.

We have a fabric couch but I always feel like its so dirty!!
I do like how comfy it is but I don't feel like I can lay down comfortably on it thinking about how smelly and dirty it is. Febreeze doesn't do the trick. I know what's under that nice smell!
I want a leather one next so I can give it a good wipe down.

We have a fabric one with a kind of textured fabric so small stains are not very visible. I love it for the warmth and comforting feel, and thankfully our LO wasn't much of a spitter upper and has never thrown up yet, so nothing much has happened to it yet! The one we have though, the fabric can easily be removed and washed or replaced.
I grew up with leather and although it is ok, I don't like the sticky feeling either, and after a few years it gets that crackly look going on. For me personally I just don't like the look of microfiber:)

We have a microfiber couch (and matching arm chair) and absolutely love it. We have a stain remover spray we got at the furniture boutique where we purchased, and it works well. Our LO spits up and our couch is dark brown, too.
Personally, not a fan of the look or feel of leather furniture.

I have a lot of furniture in linen, people think I'm crazy since I have a lo, but its my fabric of choice and easy to clean.

We have a microfiber couch and a fabric one with a slipcover. I like being able to take the whole slipcover off and wash it.
