I noticed our electricity bill is skyrocketing since it's getting colder and we need to keep our heater on. Unfortunately, we have central heating so we can't just heat the rooms we use. If it wasn't for L, we could keep the thermostat around 67 and just wear extra layers, but b/c of her, we're keeping it around 70. Do you guys think it's safe to turn on a small space heater for her in her room? I'd keep it on low, and it's brand new.

It depends on how often you plan on using it. The space heater sucks up a TON of electricity. I actually have to be careful about my usage of one since DH got furious with me after our heating bill one month nearly doubled because of the space heater use.

We don't have central heating so we have to use a space heater in the nursery. The pedi told us the safest kind is the kind with (non-replaceable) oil inside which look like little radiators. It kind of freaks me out but keeping the smoke detector close by mitigates that a little.

Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable with this. I just feel like you hear about SO many fires that start from space heaters. Whatever the increase to the electricity bill it would be well worth it to me for the peace of mind.

Honestly your baby would probably be fine at 67! My son's room gets much colder than that -- we bundle him up until its just toooo cold.

@MungBean: We have the Dyson Hot fan. Yes, it is ridiculously expensive, and i was really opposed when DH wanted to buy it. But we got a great deal on it.

It is bladeless, and the fan automatically shuts off if it falls over. Also, it doesn't get very hot, so curious hands won't burn themselves like they would on a regular heater. I can take it from room to room because it cools down as soon as i unplug it, and it is very light. I wouldn't worry about LO getting near the fan. It also turns on/off depending on what temperature you have it at so the room will never get too hot. It can also be used as a regular fan during the summer, which is great.
Yes, it was triple the cost of the space heater we have in our bedroom, but this is one of the pricey purchases i think is worth it. (Think about how much people spend on cribs!)

It would make me nervous. And space heaters do use a ton of electricity! Fleece jammies and a sleep sack should be fine. You could also get the fleece sleepsacks with arms.

i think we'll be going the space heater route when our lo arrives. we keep the heat set very low, and just use space heaters in the bedroom and living room. a lot of people have mentioned that space heaters are expensive to run, but in the past few years we've actually noticed a huge difference in our bill. running a couple space heaters is much cheaper than heating an entire house.

I would put your lo in a sleep sack! Loved our baby deedee. Need to get another one for this winter.
