This is one of my biggest fears. I'm horribly scatterbrained. I'm so afraid that one of these days, I'm going to forget that I have LO in the back seat and something happens.

DH thinks this is an irrational fear, but it's such a real fear for me that I really do think that there should be some sort of mandatory sensor like this. If there's any movement in the car, it should alert you through your remote lock/key.

I think this should be something built into car seats or come with them by default (maybe even something simple like that DIY ribbon someone posted about). I feel like a lot of people would not get an optional feature because everyone is sure they would never forget their child in a car.

Yes- i think something like this should be mandatory in all cars. I mean, a sound goes off if you don't buckle your seatbelt, lights go off automatically if you accidentally left them on. A child's life is 100x more important than that- and it should be a safety measure put in place in all cars. This can happen to anyone, and I am sure that any parents who have accidentally forgotten their child in the car would support a feature like this.

The device developed by the NASA scientists in the article is definitely something I would consider purchasing. It's sad that no one will make it because companies believe that no one would buy it or that they don't know how to market it.

Yes, I would absolutely use this and think it should be part of new car seats. This is one of my biggest fears, because it can happen to anyone. I leave my LO at home with a nanny, and I'm still paranoid and park in our parking deck just to be absolutely 1000% sure.

I remember hearing about a case from my hometown when I was still in college that was just horrifying. It's always been a fear of mine.

I think it's a great product, but not necessarily required. I have already put habits in place to prevent this. I keep my purse & lunch in the backseat on the floor, so by having to open the door in the back to grab my purse before going into work I see her car seat. It's never happened to me (we talk the whole way to daycare/work) but the fear is always in my head.

The times that concern me more are when we mess with the schedule and DH takes her to daycare or picks her up. I always make sure I call to check in. He thinks it's annoying, but it's not part of his routine like it is mine, it would be easier to forget!

There is a key fob device that has one section on your keys, and one on the backseat that you click after you remove your baby. We almost bought it because this is always, always on my mind.

@MrsKoala: I feel the same...though plenty of people buy the monitors that go under the crib mattress. I'm blanking on what they're called. I think they're just not asking the right marketers on how to market this...I would buy it in a second if it was available.

I do not think it should be mandatory. I think many parents could make due with a texting system (like mom always texts dad every morning to remind him to drop off LO at daycare), or a cell phone alarm to remind a parent, or some other strategy. I wouldn't want to add an additional financial burden to all parents by making this mandatory (assuming this would probably not be cheap technology to include in a carseat especially if it's mandatory, and lots of people would end up having to spend $$$ replacing a carseat they maybe only bought less than a year ago).

I would consider buying a product to add on though!

@2PeasinaPod: Yes, exactly! The Angelcare monitors. If those can be marketed, I don't know why a device for the car wouldn't be possible!

Wow! Such a powerful article! Thanks for sharing. I don't know if I've made up my mind on whether or not it should be mandatory. I know there's always politics involved in. In a perfect world, it should be mandatory. I would definitely buy an add-on.

This could be so useful to so many people, parents, grandparents, etc. I firmly believe things like this happen to the most vigiliant of parents, so why not? Let's think about it, at one point, seat belts didn't even exist in cars.

i don't know that I would buy a device - you've got to remember to use it -- but I have tried to "anchor" the action of checking the seat when I put my car in park.

The routine goes Park->check seat->open back door before I even leave my seat. (minivan FTW)

I just read about keeping a teddy bear buckled into your car seat and when your LO is in the car seat, you put the bear in your passenger seat. That way you always remember.

Not sure if you want to be hassled with remembering the teddy bear but maybe if you get into a habit of checking the bear, it could work.

I have a car seat mirror and I see LO the whole time I am driving, so I don't see how I could forget him because of the mirror.
