Can you drive a car with manual transmission? If so, who taught you? My high school boyfriend taught me with his Chevy S10. I remember there being some tears and a little yelling before I got the hang of it. My husband just got a new truck this week and it is a manual. I really love driving it, but I'm going to have fight my husband to get a turn. He hardly gets out of the thing!

My dad taught me to drive stick in high school. My first car was manual. I was so happy that it was when I was in college, because no one wanted to borrow it.

My dads always driven stick so I learned to drive on his car. They said it would be easier that way. My car was stick, but I had to teach dh how to drive it when we had lo so we could switch because my car isn't baby friendly.

Yup! I learned to drive on a stick (1986 Dodge Caravan, woot woot), and I’ve also owned stick shift cars.

Yep! My mom taught me when I was 16 since I was going to be driving her stick shift Toyota Tercel. I still drive a manual (a Toyota Yaris that my parents bought me for college). It's been 10 years now, and I can't wait until I can get my first automatic car!

and that's the reason why I still don't have my Swedish driver's license! I have to take the test with a dual control car and the only automatics available are hours away!

Yes! Learned the summer of 2005 while teaching at a summer camp. Learned from a British and south African chap! Bought the car for 100 bucks and it was my only way home! Needless to say I threw money at the toll booth drivers cause getting into first without stalling was impossible when starting out!

My dad taught me when I was 16, but I haven't driven stick in ages. I'd probably stall like crazy!

Yes. My mom insisted that I learn how so my first car was a stick. My stepdad taught me. Now I just have to learn how to drive my dad's '65 GMC. It is 3-on-the-tree and that is totally different.

Yup! I learned how to drive on a manual, and I always loved it. I hated having to give it up, but driving stick around Philadelphia is completely intolerable! I miss it, though. My dad mostly taught me.

I had to learn when I lived in Africa. Can you imagine having to learn to drive a stick in a city with no rules and a population of 5 million people!?

Nope! I wish I had learned but I didn't know anyone with a manual when I was in high school. I've thought about going to driving school to learn but I can't imagine having to deal with shifting in Atlanta traffic.

I never learned. An ex tried to teach me once, but it was after we were broken up and once I decided to finally cut off all my contact with him there went my lessons, lol.

I learned from my boss during a summer internship in college... in Namibia. We were in the middle of a national park with no one in sight except for the giraffes.

My first car was also a manual and my dad made me learn before I could officially have the car. Our first lesson was trying to pull up the driveway because he said starting from 0 on a hill was the hardest thing I'd ever have to do. It was awful, but I finally got it.
I've owned 1 manual car and loved it but didn't want a stick in LA traffic!
DH has a stick now and I'm glad that I know so that we can switch cars occasionally. -
Nope, I can't. My dad tried to teach my once but that was SO STRESSFUL lol, I may have cried and quit.
DH learned to drive one on our honeymoon in Europe...now THAT was scary! Being in a different country, unable to read the road signs, trying his hardest to keep the car from stalling in the middle of the highway (to no avail...).....I do not recommend this learning method!! But he did get the hang of it within a day or 2 and we enjoyed the rest of our honeymoon just fine.

Sure enough, and it's something I feel very proud about. Not sure why, but it is. It was not fun having my dad teach me, but I'm so glad I know how to.

(technically it would have been impossible for me that summer seeing as the entire COUNTRY of Namibia only had 2.5 million people at the time!)
Which city were you in?
I like to learn new modes of transport in sparsely populated countries- I learned to ride a motorcycle in Laos, where again you only have 5.5 million people in a country that's 80% rural. -
Sort of. DH taught me when we were dating on his Integra. On his current car (M3), the clutch is too deep for me, and I can't switch gears without shifting my body. So I say sort of because apparently it depends on the car and if I can actually depress the clutch.

Yes! My grandma insisted my first vehicle was a manual! I bought a dodge dakota when I was a freshman in high school before I knew how to drive it and it was torture! I didn't even get to test drive my own truck! Lol I still drive a stick and I too feel proud to be able to drive one.
oh! And my grandma taught me in a few days then said I was on my own and had to drive to school by myself..... -
Nope. I don't think I want to. I like having both hands available and the roll back on steep hills would creep me out.

No one taught me.... I had to teach myself. It's actually a funny story.When I was 18 I went with my mom to pick up a rental car (for a friend who was visiting). Of course, I was not old enough to drive the rental car, so my mom brought me along so I could drive her car back home and she could drive the rental. Neither of us thought about the fact that the car was a stick and I had never learned how to drive it. I started to freak out and cry and said I had no idea how to drive it home and she was like "Look, sweetie. We can't leave the car here. You just need to drive it home and figure it out." Well, I did! I killed it once on the 10-15 mile drive home, but that's it! From then on I have been able to drive a stick!

I made my husband switch from manual to automatic when I moved here, lol. I never drive!

I drive a manual car. I like being totally in control of the car and it's power.
