I think so... I've definitely been aware when one of our kids goes through an "ugly" period. I feel like I'm pretty rational about my kids' looks.
Although as I've gotten to know them better, they definitely look more attractive to me than they actually are. Very few people are immune to falling in love with their kids!
Anyway, do you think parents know if their kids are not cute?

I haven't known during the time, but I have gone back to look at pictures and I am like Whoa, my newborn was so weird looking. I have never thought my LO was ugly but definitely awkward.

I don't think so. When LO was first born my mom and I would stare at her and say things like, "Is she cute? She is, right? Wait, what if she is ugly but I just don't know it because I'm her mom." And I would try to be as objective as possible but always think she was cute. I'm not sure I would know it if she were ugly...

I think every parent sees beauty in their child, the same way people see good looks in their spouses or significant other. A friend of mine on facebook always describes her hubby as gorgeous even though I dont see it at all. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

I think some parents know, but some are oblivious. One of my guilty pleasures is Toddlers and Tiaras, and some of those babies and toddlers are just not cute/pretty *at all*, which makes me think some parents are just clueless; or that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I think some parents know something is up when everyone comments on a specific feature of their baby instead of saying how pretty or handsome or cute the baby is, which is another reason I lie and tell parents their baby is beautiful even if it a little trolly looking.

@Rubies: HAHA you're so funny! I didn't think my LO was beautiful/cute when they gave her to me for the first time. She started getting really pretty and adorable a couple of days later though. Then she hit a super chubby/ugly stage. (Was looking at pics last night with DH and I said "Omg she was so ugly!" DH was NOT happy). 
She's the cutest thing in the world to me, but I'm sure she isn't cute/adorable/gorgeous to everyone else who sees her.

I don't think many of them do.
Now, my parents admitted when my sister was not a cute baby. But I personally know some couples and their babies are just not cute...and they rave about how cute their babies are. Hmm.

I don't think parents know. I have a couple of friends with either fugly or weird looking babies, which inspired my post about what you say to those parents. Everyone always comments about how cute they are, so I feel like even if the parents questioned it they'd believe their friends.
Although I always wonder if my baby is cute or it's just me being a mom who obviously will think my baby's adorable.

I wonder about this! I definitely went through an ugly duckling phase and my parents have always told me how beautiful I am, even during the worst years of my phase. So maybe they just didn't want to accept that I was a little ugly?

I think some do and some do not. Like already stated, some will always see the "beauty" in their child. Which rightly so!!! But I also have seen some that are def obvlious to it and think ther baby is just "so stinking cute/ THE cutest"

Modern Daisy- My parents were the opposite! They've told me when my ugly period (as a baby) was (though not the awkward preteen stage, that's no good for confidence) as well as my sibling's ugly baby stage!

To answer the question though YES I think they know when their child might be considered "ugly," BUT I think that when you are around a certain child a lot you tend to find cuteness in them regardless, unless their attitude/behavior really stinks. For me that happens even if I'm in no way related to the child, so I imagine I'll find something cute in my own kids as well!

I was completely unaware of how weird looking my newborn was! I just could not get over how beautiful he was and how amzing that we hit the "beautiful baby" jackpot. But looking back at those early photos...whoa. I think I read a study one time that showed that mothers brains always think their child is beautiful so I guess it's normal!

Yes, I think parents know. My mom's boss had a really.... unfortunate... looking son, and she knew it. She would even say it. Not that she didn't love him, or think he was the greatest thing ever, but she knew that he wasn't the cutest thing ever!

I really think that most moms think their children are gorgeous. I have seen some unfortunate looking kids but their parents go on and on about their beauty....so yeah.
Honestly, I've had those moments when I've cringed at people's pictures on line or in blogs. People probably think my kid isn't the cutest, but I am okay with that. What really annoys me is when people have the attitude that "I think my kid/husband/whatever is gorgeous, so therefore you must too, or something is wrong with you."

When both my kids were born, I didn't think they were cute. But as I got to know and bond with them, they started getting cuter to me. But they definitely weren't THE cutest babies. I think as they got older, they became more objectively cute. So yeah, I think parents do know how cute/not cute their babies are to the world, but they will always be cute still in the parents' eyes.

I donno, I've heard people acknowledge weird features but they still think their baby is super cute.
I have a few jokes about a few of our LOs features but I still think she's the cutest/prettiest thing ever.

Some people do, but I don't think they want to hear it. lol I really hope my son comes out cute. People always tell us that we are nice looking people, so it would be bad if I baby wouldn't come out attractive.

@tana_bk took the words right out of my mouth. Some parents know and some don't... I definitely didn't think my baby was the cutest of the crop when she popped out. She had eczema and it wasn't pretty. Of course, my husband would say, "she's the cutest baby EVER!!" and I would just roll my eyes... haha, don't get me wrong.... I think she's adorable now and love her to death, but I do think I'm pretty rational/realistic when it comes to her looks.

Some people know, and can admit, if their babies are ugly. Not all, though. My nephew looks like a blond frog, and everyone goes on about how adorable he is. He's very charming, and well behaved, but without meeting him in person, it was kind of like "really? He looks like a frog. An adorably warm-blooded frog, but froggy none the less."

I really don't think some of my friends know. I say this like it's a secret, lol. But really, some of them do not have cute kids. Are their kids precious and cuddly? Of course! But not what I'd consider attractive kids. I agree that it's in the eye of the beholder.
FI and I did one of those combining pictures of the two of us and MAN that potential future kid was just AWFUL looking. And it looked nothing like either of us. I know those things are just jokes but we were a bit apprehensive for a minute.
My Mom and I always laugh because I say ALL babies are less-than-stellar looking for the first few weeks and particularly after birth - just the color is off, the faces may be squished. I told my mom if someone tells me my kid is cute and it's not, I'll probably side-eye them. Lol. I'm a bit overly realistic I guess. Then again, I'm sure I'll dote on my kids and think they are the world.
