When we were looking for a house, my mom kept pointing out houses in her neighborhood and on her street. Ummm.... no thanks. I like to be close enough that she can come for emergencies but far enough away that she doesn't just pop in. She's here 2-3 times a week as it is! They're about 10-15 minutes away. My in laws are a half hour away, I wouldn't mind them being a teeny bit closer.

I wish my parents were closer. My mom is a child psychologist which would really come in handy. And they are both just wonderful with kids.
I wish my MIL was further away as she is emotionally abusive and I'd like to limit our future LO's exposure to her.
FIL is just down the road and is elderly so have little time left with him. I really hope he stays around long enough for our kids to know and remember him, he's a remarkable man. -
My mom's family all lives on one street and they are having a hard time with the fact that I currently live ONE hour away. I lived 30 min away when I was in college and I think that was pretty comfortable. Actually, DH and I hope to move back to that town later this year.
We live 5 minutes from DH's parents right now and I actually love it (I'm really close to them). When we move, we'll be about an hour away and that actually makes me kinda sad
but the town we live in now is too far from anything (I drive 45 min to work everyday).

I'd like if my parents lived closer but I know they wouldn't like it as much as we do. If we could live in THEIR town, life would be perfect. Alas, there is no industry there, so we can't but I would LOVE for them to be a little closer than 2 1/2 hours.
My in-laws? No. I like them far away. Sorry, but I do. My husband is mad that they keep moving further and further away from their kids and grandkids but he wouldn't want them nearby either.

I have been campaigning for my parents to move for a few years. Mostly because my dad is having more and more problems with the stairs in their house, but it would be nice if they were a little closer (they're about a half hour away). I'm sure that once there is a grandchild in the picture, I won't have to twist their arms much.
I'd also love for my In-Laws to live closer. I definitely got lucky in the IL Lottery! They are all in S. America though, so about a day's worth of travel away. I keep telling my husband that if his sister's family decides that they don't like living in Australia, that I'd love for them to try out living in the US. Doubtful though!

hahaha yea...anything within walking distance might be a tad bit too close. But I would LOVE to have both sides close like within 30 minutes. Alas, it's not possible.

We live about an hour and a half from my parents, we don't see them all the time since they hate city driving.
We live clear across the country from my in-laws, but we see them about 3-4 times a year if possible.
We Skype a lot with both sets of grandparents.

I really wish my parents were closer. I am jealous of my friends who still live in our hometown or much closer to it. I wish MIL would move closer too, but she actually might after she retires. I'd like her close enough to do a day trip instead of every time we see her having to be an overnight trip with boarding of pets, etc. But I'm not sure I'd want her close enough to just drop by at this point! But then again, DH is an only child, so her care will fall to us as she ages, so closer might be a blessing in the long run.

We are 3 hours away from both of our families. I could stand them to be a bit closer, like 1 1/2 hours away. It is nice to have them far enough that they would never drop by, and they don't demand much of us, but it would be nice to have them close enough to do a one day visit for holidays and stuff, right now whenever we visit it pretty much has to be a weekend long visit.

I wish my mother and sister were closer but am fine with how far my IL's are from us. As it is, everyone on on both sides are only 1.5 hours away which is totally manageable for holidays, etc.

Yes! We actually bought a house right around the corner from my parents, but they moved not long after we got here. The closer the better if you ask me!

I'd give my right arm to live close to any of our parents. We live a 2.5 hour drive from my parents and an 11-13 hour drive from DH's. It's stressful and sad and is going to be awful when we have kids since none of them like to travel.

We had the same game plan @artbee. We knew we'd be close, but wanted a short drive between us and the parents (both sides). Both sets are 20 min away in our hometown.

@artbee: I want to live close to my parents for sure, but DH and I both want to live a good few hours from his parents. MIL hasn't received the memo her son is not a babyboy but is a married man. Unfortunately for them, my parents are 11hrs away so we will live 11hrs away from in-laws once we move.

i definitely want my parents close and in-laws close but not neighbors! my hubby wants them to move in with us eventually. unfortunately, i'm moving away from my parents =(... but not as far as i used to be.

My husband picks on me, but if I could live next door to my in-laws, I probably would (in fact, when a house in their neighborhood goes up for sale, I send it to him and tell him its my dream home). My Dad and Step-Mom are about 5 hours away (I wish they were closer, but its never bothered me that they don't live close) and my Mom and Stepdad are about an 1 1/2 away...and I'm ok with that distance!!

I wish my parents lived closer. Both the parents and in-laws live 5 hours away by car and with a LO on the way I've started to realize it would be great to have family close by. I think the ideal distance for us would be to have my parents 1-2 hours away, but I'm fine living 5 hrs from the in-laws.

I wish we lived closer to my mom. I also wouldn't mind living closer to DH's dad and stepmom. I think all 3 of them would be helpful with LO and it would be nice to spend more time with them. I'm glad we don't live so close to DH's mom though.

Good god yes. I always lived within a 30 min drive from my parents and even though they drove me crazy sometimes, my mom and I are both extremely independent and for the most part we had a great balance of seeing each other and staying out of each others' hair. Now that they live a 7 hour drive away it's like torture. I hate talking on the phone. Luckily my mom's whole side of the family lives near me so they tend to come up pretty often.
Wagon Sr.'s mom lives a 4 hour drive away but she doesn't drive. She does hop on a train or bus pretty often for weekends since her work schedule allows for long weekend visits. I'd love for her to live near us, but she has a pretty busy and full life where she is and if she moved here, she'd have no friends and no job. Which would mean she'd be around a LOT!
Bottom line though, we'd rather have the support and help of grandparents nearby. We do it alone and we have lots of very eager babysitters, which is great, but nothing can beat family.

For the past two years, we have lived about 12 hours away from my parents and like 17 from DH's. Soon we'll be moving about 30-45 minutes away from my parents and I'm psyched! I don't want to ever be close enough for us to not have to make plans to see each other, but I want us to be close by for when we have LOs. DH's family will be about 6 hours away and that's perfect.

I would love to live within a five minute walk from my parents! On the other hand, I like my in-laws far away. They've been on a different continent since I met my husband but they're moving back in a couple of weeks, living half hour away- I'm not sure how we're going to deal with that...

My father-in-law lives about 20 minutes away (longer if there is traffic). We see my FIL about once a week for dinner and my husband talks to or texts with him nearly every day. It's sweet how close they are.
My parents live 12 hours away, so we only see them a couple of times a year. We don't have children yet but I am sad that when we do, they won't know their grandparents on my side very well. We would like to get a home with an extra bedroom so that they can come and visit as often as possible, but they're also kind of homebodies and don't like to travel for some reason. Maybe that'll change if they have a grandbaby to come see!
I am super envious of all you bees with parents nearby. One of the hardest things about living away from my family that I have had to come to terms with is that I won't have any nearby family support when we have children.

No, we live across the country from my parents and inlaws. The distance is hard because most of my family live close to them, too.
When we move back, I wouldn't mind being a couple hours from them.

We all live in the same small city currently, well minus my Dad. Want to say maybe a 10 minute car ride to my mom's & DH's parents houses.
We are currently considering putting a house on my moms property though! She has GREAT boundaries so we don't have to worry about the "Everybody Loves Raymond" fiasco... plus she LOVES DH so she's very respective of his space & would never be all up in his butt over things. lol
We would NEVER live next to DH's mom though... Oh geeze, I could already see her upset that we weren't over there every night for dinner. AARRGGGGHHHH!
