We don't have a home phone. My dad recently pointed out that he feels like we (meaning all of us) miss out on building a relationship with our in-laws because my family calls me on my cell phone, and hubs's family calls him on his cell phone. I never really thought about it, but it's a good point. Growing up, I remember if I answered the phone when Grandpa called, I talked to him. Or if my dad answered when Aunt Em (my mom's sister-in-law) called, he talked to her. I think maybe our generation misses out on that a bit.

I really don't mind that I don't talk to his parents... If they want to talk to me, they call me or ask for me while he's on the phone with them. Same goes for my parents. If they want to talk to him, they'll call him or ask for him.

we have a house phone, but most people still call our cells - however, i think we still talk to each others parents a bit, my IL's will call me pretty often, and vice versa with DH and my parents.
i see your point, though - there is the decrease in "random" unplanned conversation when there isnt a house phone because you know specifically who you are calling and getting on the other end.

We Skype with my in-laws every week, so I don't feel like I'm missing out. DH also talks/emails them during the week, but we both talk to them on the weekends. We see my parents probably once a month, and we Skype with them regularly, too, so I don't think this is an issue for either of our families.

I definitely agree. My parents will call DH if they have a specific question and his parents call me when they specifically need to talk to me. But, when our parents just want to chat, they call their own child's phone.

I actually make it a point to take pics of the kids with my iPhone, and then MMS them to my MIL... I call her about once a month or two if there's an especially cute one.

I see your point! We do have a home phone, though, so we still have those random phone conversations sometimes.

My mother in law calls my cell when she wants to chat. Sometimes my husband and I will both talk to her on speaker.

Hm I can definitely see how I would talk to them more often if we had a home phone. But I think I talk to them a fair amount. Often through email, text, FaceTime and/or on the phone. They have a home phone and we rarely call them on it!

Sometimes my mil calls my phone even when dh could easily have answered her question. We see them weekly so even if we don't talk on the phone often I feel like we still see each other a lot.

We don't miss out at all, cell phones and computer work great for us- we Skype once a week with both sets of grandparents on the weekends.
We talk on the phone with my husband's parents on the weekends too, my husband just puts his iphone on speaker and we all listen in and comment. Same thing with my folks, we just put the cells on speaker and all feel involved.

I agree with this and have actually thought about it before. My in-laws only call my husband, not me, and I never call them. When he's around me while talking to them, I might get on to say hi, but we usually talk to our families during our commutes, so it only happens once a month or so. I think if we had a house phone, I would "accidentally" talk to them much more regularly.

My in laws call me or text me on my cell phone at least once a day!

Ha! We have a home phone with call display and when FIL calls I usually just pass the phone to him to answer. Makes me think that if I really wanted to talk to him, it wouldn't matter if we only had a cell or not.

DH's parents call him on his cell phone, I have talk to them on the phone in umm.... probably since I saw them last which was last January! I text his mom sometimes or communicate via facebook, but we're not all that close anyway. I do wish they reached out to me a little more, but eh it is what it is.
But since we live so close to my parents, DH talks to them all the time.
I'm sure now that we have LO we'll make more of a point to skype with DH's parents and have him talk to them. -
We have a house phone, but our parents call us on our cell phones any how. They only call our house phone if they can't reach us via cell. Our parents always ask about the other and how the other's parents are when they do call though.

We have a house phone that we rarely use. DH and I both use our cell phones to call our parents. We both call both sides of the family, not nearly as much as we speak to our own; but def more than regularly

I never speak to my in-laws on the phone, and vice versa, but I do email and g-chat my MIL. We usually take vacations with them a couple of times a year, too, so we've done plenty of bonding. It's an interesting point though, I hadn't thought about how back when people used landlines, you'd get the chance to talk to your in-laws more often.

We see our in laws every one to two weeks, so we have personal interaction. I do not talk to my in laws much on the phone but do occasionally!

I grew up with a home phone but don't see much of a change now that my husband and I only have cell phones. Growing up we had caller id so we could tell who was calling and pretty much assume who they wanted to talk to. Dads parents were calling for dad, mom's mom called for her, etc. so I don't think there's much of a difference now with my on inlaws. My inlaws do call my phone a lot though because of my husband's crazy work/sleep schedule they never know if he's sleeping and don't want to wake him. They'll call me to see what he's doing first. Same with my parents...if my dad is calling to talk to my husband he'll still call me first.

We don't have a home phone and my in laws still call/text me. I think it's because my husband is horrible about answering his phone/calling or texting back though. He gets really busy at work and just completely forgets. They always know they'll get an answer if they go straight to me
I do make an effort to keep in touch with them personally as well. I'll text my MIL ultrasound pictures, etc. right now and when we were planning our wedding I'd call to fill her in on how things were going.

Never thought about this. I talk to my ILs but my DH rarely talks to mine.

I see what you mean, but I really don't care. That sounds bad... but I just don't really have a lot to talk to my inlaws about. They don't like me very much, so until we have a LO and I have something aside from my own life to talk to them about (which they already judge enough without my telling them), I'm kind of glad I don't have to talk to them often.
My DH talks to my parents all the time though. -
I live across the country from my family so the time difference is what makes us talk less. We have cell phones instead of a land line. Oh, we facetime when we can.
