The post by Mr Bee asking about where our money goes made me wonder how much other people spend. I'm in NYC and it is so expensive here compared to where I grew up. Since this is an anonymous board I'm okay saying I pay in the range of $20,000 a month! It is so insane how expensive it is here! Where I use to live in the midwest we could have a huge mansion with acres for that money! My husband has no interest in living there though sadly. So make me jealous if you live in the midwest or anywhere else! What do you pay for mortgage/rent each month?

Our mortgage is $1200. We have a three bedroom home. When we lived in a one bedroom apartment we paid $750 a month in rent.

In the bay area we pay $1800/month for a 2-bedroom townhouse. When we move to Iowa in the fall we'll be paying $615/month for a 3-bedroom single-family home. To me that still sounds unreal!

I voted less than $500 because we are lucky enough to no longer have a mortgage, we just set aside money each month for property taxes.
ETA: We were paying $900 per month for our 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment before we bought our house.

No mortgage here. I bought it outright, so all we pay are property taxes, $2000 on a 3bedroom 2 1/2 bath house. That's it for now in this economy. We have a great school system and sure when it gets better its going to be high.lol

$20k a MONTH??? Holy moly. I can't imagine spending that much a month just to rent a place.
We bought a 5.bedroom, 3 bath 2600sf house in Raleigh, NC for $200k.

Our rent is $550 a month for a 2 bedroom/1 bath house. We live in a very rural area in NC. Where we're from (the beach), a 2 bedroom is typically $800-$900 a month.

Our mortgage payment is 740 a month for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home.

We pay about $1600/£950 a month in rent and we're on the low end. :\ We did get a really good price on our house because the letting agency was desperate to fill up the neighborhood. We have a 3b/2.5b, 1700sq ft house with a 1 car garage. The high end is around $4000/£2500.
We own a home back home in the states (St. Louis) that's paid off but worth somewhere in the $90-100k range.

Ours is 1200 and that includes taxes & interest (so 950ish without). That's in Florida, for a nice (but not perfect) 3 bedroom single family home in a great neighborhood.

@ecogirl: gf, that is inSANE! haha. we're moving to jersey and i don't want to pay $4,000 in rent. lol. luckily, my husband and i have absolutely no desire to live in the city.
my mortgage for home in va is less than $1,500 for a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2400+ sq home. our rent for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1200 or so sq apartment is almost $3,000 in long island. unbelievable. hate paying this much!

Tequiero21 Isn't it crazy how the price jumps because of the location? VA sounds like a wonderful value. It's a very pretty place too so I'm surprised that the costs are so reasonable. Our place is only about 3800 sq feet but I think being in the UES really brings the price up. A friend that lives right next to me is selling and plans to move to Florida in double the space for a quarter of the cost haha! Smart girl!

We rent out our townhouse for $1050. And our mortgage here is a little over $1000. I'm in the Tampa bay area.
My sister is in NY and I always thought her $1900 400 square foot apartment was pretty crazy.

@ecogirl: new york is expensive, but not that expensive girlfriend! don't scare people! hehe. it's your choice to pay $20k but it certainly doesn't HAVE to be that much. you want to live on the UES and have a large apt so it is gonna cost, yeah! that is why we moved to westchester and pay way less for more space, although it is still more than $5500. but i am not saying i could afford $20k/month either! hehe.

Artbee Oh my gosh that is crazy when you think of it that way haha! If you look at it as $ per square foot and gave your sister my square footage she'd be paying around $19,000 so I guess it works out!

there are also different areas of va - northern va (which is near DC) is definitely more like ny than richmond (around where my house is)....

Andrea I love Westchester! It is really beautiful there. I didn't mean to imply that my mortgage is the norm in NYC haha! Oh no I hope no one took it that way! Haha I have been telling my husband that we should look into finding a home on the coast with a big backyard but we really do love living in the city! I know I could get more for our money if we moved to the suburbs though.

Wow! Right now we pay $810/month for rent. We have 1100 sq ft 2 BR 1 BA townhouse apartment. We are looking to buy though, and there are a ton of homes around us right now for less than $75,000 due to the market. They aren't the biggest houses or most extravagant but 3BR 1-2BA 1000 sq ft. We are looking to buy actually right now!

@ecogirl: yeah, i didn't want to scare everyone just in case. haha. if we could afford a big place in the city it would have been nice to stay! we always talk about buying a pied a terre so at least we'd have something in the city when we go in and don't want to drive all the way back home, though. not in the budget yet unfortunately!

Andrea How do you feel about moving? Are you happier with more space and fresh air for the kids? I'm really torn about what to do. I know my husband doesn't really want to leave the city but it might just be a battle I feel comfortable having. On one hand, the kids have so much to do and so much culture here but I grew up with fields and yards and deer so I want that for them too! I don't know what to do.

@ecogirl: i love it here so we have no regrets. i still go into the city a few times a month and the LO has been to the city a bunch, too. we are only 30 minutes away so i don't feel like she is going to lose out terribly since we will always take her to nyc. the whole tri-state area is so diverse. i feel like we explore all areas of it now versus when we lived in NYC - sometimes you just don't bother leaving since you think everything is already there, if you know what I mean! so the LO is getting exposure to more things now than just city stuff.

We rent in Brooklyn and pay $1700 a month. Our lease is up in October and we are looking into a co-op, in the price range we are looking at, our monthly mortgage plus common charges would be $2k.

We pay about $2300/month in the Philly suburbs, but nearly $1000 of that is property taxes! We live in an amazing school district, I joke that I wish I could send this kid to school as soon as she's out to take get our money's worth!

Wow, I'm glad I live in NC! We bought a 3 bedroom 2 bath with 2 car garage in a fantastic neighborhood with great schools for $835 a month. I couldn't imagine paying what some of you ladies are for my mortgage!

We live in Boston (Brookline, actually) and own a 2bedroom condo. We put a substantial downpayment down when we bought and so our mortgage is approximately $1,500 a month (not including insurance or taxes or condo fees).
When we rented, our rent was $2,000 a month...

I always drool over the NYC apartments featured in the Times Sunday magazine – I’m guessing some of those are probably in the 20k range! ;o!
We live in Portland, Maine and own a 3 bed / 2 bath condo in a completely remodeled Victorian home (not a cookie cutter condo building) and our mortgage is about $1700, plus $185/month in HOA fees. That includes property taxes, and we put a substantial amount down for a down payment to reduce our monthly mortgage.

I live in North Dallas and my current mortgage is $1,395 per month (property taxes, property insurance, and PMI included for a 15 year note) for a 3 bed, 2 bath house. The escrow account that houses the taxes and what not is $788 per month so a little over $600 would be strictly mortgage?

We live in downtown Baltimore and pay $1,366 in rent for a 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom 2-story townhome. When we move to Nashville eventually, we're looking to rent a 2-3 bedroom / 2 bathroom single family home for $1300-$1600.

I think a lot of people are surprised at how many places are in the $20,000 range in NYC. Of course it isn't the norm and I don't want to scare anyone away as Andrea said haha but if you are looking for a larger home in a good area in NYC it gets pricey! I finally found my friends listing and she said she doesn't care if I post it. My home is really similiar except our bottom floor has an indoor pool room that then extends to the patio. My favorite part of her home is the old fireplaces that they kept! So pretty! But if you had this home in another part of the country there is no way it would be 6 million in my opinion.

Right now we pay 811/month for a 713sqft 1 bd apartment, utilities included. We're actively looking for a 3 bedroom, and prices really vary depending on where you want to live in the city - from 1,075$ to upwards of over 2k.
Our budget is about 1300-1400 without utilities and 1600 with. We COULD afford 1800 everything included if we wanted to be house poor.....still debating if that's a viable option right now, lol.
I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, if that helps. Housing is CRAZY expensive!

@ecogirl: I also made less then the average person here (I hope). My husband makes more than double what I made. Which is why I don't feel bad about losing my income to be a SAHM. It's not like I had much of an income anyway.
