Our first will be here in a few weeks and I have been slowly stocking up on basics on sale. We were team green until 34 weeks, at that point we found out we are having a little girl so I have been rounding out her wardrobe with some things that are a little girlier. I'm great at finding deals and have bought a few things here on classifieds. I live in Oregon, so I am going to wait on summer clothes until our true summer which is usually the 4th of July thru Labor Day, to make sure I am getting the right size. I am also going to wait on true winter items like a rain coat and boots till we need them. I have converse chucks up to size 5 and moccasins up to 18 mo. I will also wait on special occasion clothes until we need them. I don't want to go overboard but I would also like to get most shopping done before baby gets here. We will be doing daycare 2x a week starting at 6 months, I am cloth diapering so laundry 3x a week. @littlejoy gave me some great hand me downs and zipper sleepers. I don't expect to be gifted more than a handful of items. Any advice on quantity? Or items? Any tips for dressing a babe in cloth diapers? I have been buying baby gap pants up to 24 months.

Dresses and skirts looked silly on LO before she could sit up (and they look even better once they can stand/walk). So I'd aim for onesies/pants and sleepers for the first 6 months. LO spit up a lot so it was actually good that we had a lot in each size. I would have at least 5-6 sleepers in each size. I'd probably also have that many onesies. Carter's is great for stuff like this because a lot of their outfits are mix and match. Rompers/bubbles are also great for the summer.

@lawbee11: perfect! That was my feeling too on dresses I got one chambray dress before 6 mo, but was thinking she would look like a little lump wearing a dress before she can sit up, I did get some cute head wrap things, I also have a couple beanies in each size. My mental checklist is 7 pairs cotton pants/leggings, and 7 long or short sleeve onesies, plus a few cute zip sweatshirts or sweaters in each size. And a weeks worth of sleepers.

From 0-6 months I would definitely have at least 10 short or long sleeve onesies in each size (depending on season) and 5 footed sleepers. If you have a puker, you might be changing clothes 3+ times per day. I did laundry every 2-3 days with my DD because we were constantly running out of clothes! The first 3 months both of my LOs lived in onesies and sleepers. I don't think DD wore real jeans until about 9 months because I loved putting her in dresses once she was out of sleepers all the time. Even at 14 months, she still only has one pair of jeans because she almost always wears dresses.

Shoes are hard. You never know what size they need when they start walking. My Lo was still in a 3 when walking. So we didn't need hard soled shoes till she was a 4.
I would only buy basics ahead that don't matter the season till you know how big LO is and how fast she grows/sizes up. I wasted a ton of money on clothes cause she ended not moving up sizes in clothes and shoes like I thought she would.
I agree with Lawbee11 dresses are hard when they are crawling.

@youboots: That sounds perfect! I think that's plenty to start out with. Plus you never know how long your LO will be in each size.

@Smurfette: good call on the dresses while crawling. My Mom also said to avoid things with white in them for leggings, I still got a few navy and white striped ones but she said the knees will get dirty. I did not even think about crawling in a dress. We live in a farming community and I Work at home and unless I'm shooting a wedding I dress super casual, and she will be dressed the same. Sounds like dresses will be reserved for special occasions and bought as needed until she has a preference for them.

@lamariniere: my drawer for 0-3 mo sleepers is out of control between gifts and hand me downs I have over 10. I also have another few open bottom gowns. My plan was to keep the babe in those for the first few months unless we leave the house.

I tend to go overboard with clothes but I liked having a lot so I didn't HAVE to do laundry every day. I ended up doing laundry 2-3 weeks for baby clothes. I probably had to change outfits 3-4 times a day in the early weeks. Lots of spit up and blow outs. But by the time they could sit up better (4-6 months) there was less spit up so less changing. I never bought too far ahead because I didn't know what size my boys would be in. They both grew really fast and only lasted in each size a couple of months.

@Mamasig: oh yes! She had days when she was spitting up and changing 4-5 times at daycare and like 8 bibs. I was doing laundry all the time.
