Parents should bill her for 18 years of room and board!

This makes me really sad. What a brat. It doesn't seem like we have the full story though...not sure if i would kick my kid out of the house because they didn't do chores or missed curfew?

It still doesn't change our plans for our LOs. We have already opened up an RESP for her future education. I did mention to DH that once she's old enough i want her to start contributing to her RESPs as well. Hopefully our relationship doesn't end up the same way as that family.

I've been reading about this. Sounds like the judge is treating it as the ridiculous case that it is. I just can't believe the girl's friend's family is not only housing her, but also paying her legal fees ($11k so far??).... ugh. Those poor parents.

I didn't hear that the case was dismissed? I read yesterday that the judge denied the emergency request that the parents be forced to pay her second semester tuition at her high school because the high school said it wouldn't kick her out regardless, so the judge said there is no emergency and the issue of whether they are ultimately responsible for her high school or college tuition will be handled at the full hearing on the matter later this year?

I don't see her winning. Certainly not her college education, I can't' imagine there is any precedent that a parent HAS to pay for college. And being that she is 18 and wants money to pay for private high school I don't see how that will fly either. Maybe if she was 17 and suing only for living expenses, not tuition? But who knows.

I don't think I can have kids if we're required to pay their tuition! I was blessed that my parents paid for mine; DH had to take out student loans. We agreed that we'll try to help our kids out but I doubt we'd be in the financial stage to pay it all for one or more kids.

Ridiculous.

Without seeing *exactly* what was pled/alleged, I wouldn't be too quick to draw judgment . . . sometimes what gets reported about cases is off . . .waaaaaay off!

Based on what's being reported in the media, she certainly seems to be acting in an unpleasantly entitled manner.

That said, I have some sympathy for her position -- especially in regards to college funding. Students under the age of 25 have their parents income considered for their eligibility for federal student loans. Whether the parent intends to contribute -- or even if they are willing to provide their tax information to the student so s/he can complete the FAFSA does very little to affect aid eligibility.

I experienced this when I was in college -- my father was homeless for much of that time. I didn't know where he was, if he had income, or even if he was alive for much of that time. I had a lot of trouble qualifying for federal student aid because of the lack of information. Fortunately, the school I was attending was willing to take it into account and I got a fair amount of grant aid. However, not all schools have the means to do this.

I can't even discuss this topic without blowing my top. SOCIETY TODAY!!!!

@MamaMoose: I have to agree with you - I believe parents have a responsibility to pay for their children's education. This is a big factor in why we will only have two children.

Wow, I cannot believe this. I mean, I can, because I feel like younger generations nowadays have such a huge sense of entitlement, but this is absolutely ridiculous. And it's crazy that her friends' parents are funding this brouhaha. What the heck?!

I heard somewhere yesterday that some 18 yo was trying to sue their parents for child support for themselves! Good luck with that!

@MsLipGloss: @lisa1783: The man she is staying with is a laywer, but he is not representing the girl. He is, however, funding her legal representation. I wouldn't be surprised if the two lawyers work together in the same firm, though!

@lisa1783: It's not the dad of the friend representing her. The dad of the friend she is staying with is PAYING for her representation, but someone else is her lawyer.

I read this yesterday and it is absolutely ridiculous! I will contribute what I can, but in no way will I be funding my children's entire college expense.
