I heard this on NPR this morning and thought it was fascinating! Would this be enough to get you to suck on your kid's paci to clean it off? Or do you already do that? I'm not above doing this once he starts chucking them on the ground...

The balance though is that it speeds colonization of the teeth with pathogenic bacteria that cause cavities. I would never put a pacifier in my mouth to clean it! If you are familiar with the hygiene hypothesis, then this may explain why kids with dirty pacifiers have less allergies.

Interesting! I have cleaned w/my mouth a few times when it fell on the ground away from home, but the thought repulses me, ugh. Now I just pack a spare paci.

I heard that this morning too! We do it often, depending on how dirty/where the pacifier lands. The floor of our own home = yes. A parking lot = no.

I wipe the pacifiers clean with a food-safe cleaning wipe. However, S LOVES to share things, and is forever offering me and DH his pacifier to suck on, so they do land in a mouth other than his every once in a while.

hehe i've done it before and it doesn't gross me out (although i try to do it a bit secretly incase others are grossed out hehe), but i try not to mainly because of the cavities thing.

@mewtill: Same here!
We do it sometimes depending on where its landed. DH does it more than I do.
