Do you leave your house when you use the self cleaner on your oven?
My mom is adamant that you do, but I've heard friends say they don't!
If you have pets, and you leave, what do you do with your pets?

I have never used the oven cleaning function!

What are these self-cleaning ovens you speak of? Will they also clean the rest of my house?

@illumina: haha! I've never used it until today and we are currently staying in..... It's pretty stinky but I don't want to admit my mom is right. HA

I open the windows and play outside. It's smells SO BAD. I wouldn't use it in the wintertime, at least here, because I don't want to open my windows in 20* weather!

I don't think I ever have. I don't feel like it smells all that terribly bad though?

Mine has a steam clean option and thats the only one we've used... we did it when we were home though! It doesn't smell as bad as a normal self cleaning. I've never heard that you're supposed to leave!

I don't leave the house - the smell is bad and the kitchen gets so hot, but I'm paranoid about leaving when it's on.

I thought you only had to leave if you were using chemicals with it? Basically I think our oven just heats up really hot and burns the stuff off.

@T.H.O.U.: You aren't supposed to use any chemicals when doing self-cleaning, just let it all burn off then wipe it down.
It can totally combust with chemicals being involved

Omg I've always wondered how an oven self-cleans! haha.

I never use it. I'm really paranoid about heat that high causing a fire somehow, and I can't really load up my cats, dog, and baby to go somewhere while it's in use. I don't like to leave appliances (dryer, dishwasher, etc.) running when we are gone or asleep in case of fire.

I used that feature in our condo we lived in when preg with DS. I turned it on and we watched tv. 2 hours later some friends came knocking and when we opened the door they freaked out!!! Oblivious to us the condo was full of smoke - once they mentioned it we then realized it too - the smell too!
OMG I was terrified I had done damage to my baby and never used it again! We have been in our new house 4 years and I still wont use that feature!
If you use it go out back while it cleans and open all the windows!!

It just gets really hot, so there's nothing inherently dangerous about the smell. But it is unpleasant. I usually do it on a day that it's nice to sit outside for a while and open up all the windows. But I like to be in the nearby vicinity so I can check on it just in case I need to call the fire department or something.

Ours is gas, so no, I won't leave the house with it on. Not with the 4 animals here.
But, my MIL won't leave the house with the crock pot going! I tell her it's the whole point of a slow cooker...to cook while you're not at home!

@avivoca: see, this is what I think too. How am I supposed to pack up all my pets as well? Or does it not affect them? Lol.
I'm glad so many of you don't leave. And I know it all makes sense to me about not wanting to leave while the oven is on at such high temps. I think my mom doesn't realize that applies to chemical cleaners. We have the windows open but it's kinda chilly outside. We might go to target. Haha it probably wasn't the BEST day to do an oven clean! oh well.

Nope. I stay home. Mine just gets really really hot so all I have to do after 2 hours is wipe away the gunk. I try really hard to contain any spill overs after I cook and clean up messes immediately so there's not much odor during the self-cleaning phase.

I don't leave when it's on. It just gets WAAAAAAY too hot so I feel like the risk of fire is pretty high. We open all the windows and play outside or upstairs.

I've never used that feature, but now I'm intrigued! Does it work well? I think I'll have to wait until spring or summer, it's -20*C here right now so windows will be staying shut.

@PermaStudent: it's still going, I will update you when it's finished!

@PermaStudent: really good!! I just need to wipe all the burnt up stuff out! Which will be easy, it wipes away really clean.
Now I just wish I could clean between the window glass because it's all dusty in there! Can't even tell I have a clean oven. Wah!
