My older DS is 3 yrs 4 mos. His speech has never been an issue - he does have a bit of a lisp but no other concerns. Just the past few days, he seems to have started stuttering. He just gets hung up on a couple of words - "what", "why" and "look" at the beginning of a sentence are the ones we've noticed. "What" has become really tough for him, to the point that it takes him a while to get it out and a couple of times he's said "momma, can you say the word for me? I can't say it." I am wondering if this can be a normal stage or should we start looking into speech therapy? As I said, it has really only been going on for a few days but I want to get intervention for him if he'll need it. Thanks for any advice!

My niece (4yo) does this quite a bit! My sister asked the pediatrician, he said it was normal and she'll grow out of it. Anecdotal, but that's all I've got!

My son is 2.5 and has had that happen a few times. He will suddenly start stuttering on those same words for a few days/week and I find it actually seems to correspond with a big language jump for him. Like it takes some time for his tongue to catch up with his brain.

My son stuttered a bit in his 3rd year, but his speech is mostly normal with a fairly large vocabulary. I suspect the stuttering was partly due to the fact that he had so much to say or ask, that sometimes he hadn't quite formulated his thoughts and they came out as a stutter as he was thinking about what he wanted to say.

We are having a lot of stuttering right now, but at 2.5 years. He's pretty advanced with language though. It seems to be when he's searching for the right words to say, so less about the first word, more about the ones that follow, especially if he's trying to explain something new. I've looked into it a bit too and it definitely seems normal. I'd ignore at as much as possible and wait for him to say it.

@shellio: it's very typical for kids aged 3-5 to start stuttering. Most of the time it coincides with a language explosion. Unless there is a family history of stuttering and/or he is exhibiting some other physical behaviors (eyes closed, tight fists, etc), I would give it 4-6 months to see if it works itself out. I think it's normal! My nephew did this around that age and his pedi just said to basically ignore it. My sister did and he's 8 yo now and hasn't stuttered in a long time.
