We're flying to visit my family for Christmas, and since my parents won't be working with the holidays, they'll be free to watch the kids! 
I've pretty much been everywhere there is to go in Southern California. I thought about wine tasting in Temecula, relaxing in Palm Springs, beach at Laguna... Mr. Bee suggested the Grand Canyon!
I don't want to travel too long though. Any suggestions for some place cool to visit, just for 30 hours or so?

What about either driving to Buellton and playing tourist/wine tasting or catching a quick flight to Vegas?

I was gonna say Vegas too! Do you want to see something or just get away? We did a staycation in SD over Thanks and it was really nice.

We stayed in the Italian section of San Diego and that was great. On Saturday was a fabulous farmers market/street fair.
Solvang is in the same area as buellton/los Olivos for wine tasting. Solvang is a Danish style tourist trap and definitely adult oriented. You can take the train up that way I believe (at least to Santa Barbara).

@brownie: we've been to solvang and san diego on trips pre-kids, so would like to take mr. bee some place new! i'd be happy to hit cabazon and then palm springs.

Maybe I read it wrong. Have you been to Temecula or Palm Springs? The Temecula Creek Inn is great and reasonable. And Palm Springs is really relaxing, but definitely quiet.

I wouldn't want to drive too far. I'd recommend Laguna! Gorgeous beaches (you guys should check out thousand steps beach! So secluded and beautiful).... Great food, south coast plaza and fashion island right there if you want to do some shopping, and it's fun just walking up and down downtown Laguna and looking at the little boutiques and art galleries. Maybe you guys can even sign up for one of those vino and art date night things! I feel like it has a good balance of relaxation and things to do.

I second Santa Ynez/Los Olivos for wine or Palm Springs for a fun resort Grand Canyon would be a veryyyy long drive
