We just got a playset with a trampoline, swings and slide. Our area is mashed down muddy grass and I’m quickly realizing we need something under it. Did you put sand, wood mulch, rubber mulch, something I’m not thinking of?

We did mulch which I don’t love but couldn’t come up with a better option. I was against rubber mulch because i felt like it would be a huge pain to remove later on

Check out play ground tiles. There are a few different brands. If you want to put it down for the safety aspect, I think you have to put 12 inches of mulch for a six foot drop height.

We did pea gravel, which I actually love because it looks nice and drains well but I am dreading the day we have to remove it because there’s just so much of it. We couldn’t do mulch because our yard retains too much moisture and it would have gotten gross.

@Ms. RV: I would have loved playground tiles but they were too pricey for us!

It's actually 3 inches for a 6 ft drop height... and this infographic suggests it is the most effective material. You can google "astm fall height recommendations."
We used rubber mulch this past week for our new playset. Interestingly, Home Depot's unit price was cheaper for the small bags vs. The medium bags. It was something like 60 bags for $6 each, tax and then a $75 delivery fee. Total was $500ish for a 15 x 15 area.

We do mulch with Gorilla playmats under each swing and at the baseS of the slides. Our playset is in a soggy area of the yard, and the mats In high traffic really help keep shoes (and bums) clean. They’re not cheap (and are really heavy to move) but are worth it. We got Reddish brown, which look kind of ugly on their own on the website but blend nicely with the mulch.

@PinkElephant: How long have you had the Gorilla playmats? I'm curious how they hold up.
DH wanted to do rubber mulch under the entire playset but I think it is too much work, will complicate mowing (kids will throw it everywhere) and would be a pain to remove in the future. I like the playmat idea as the only areas of concern for me are under the swings and potentially the slide.

@Bluemasonjar: We bought ours 3+ years ago and while they aren’t as fresh looking as they once were, I don’t think they’ve deteriorated at all. I can’t emphasize how heavy they are - I can only move one at once, and it isn’t easy - so they are not moved/dragged by the kids. They get moved once a year by the landscapers when they put down new mulch.
