Some of DH's family came over today to see DS for the first time since we brought him home from the hospital. When they saw that he was swaddled, they made all sorts of comments about how horrible it was, that we were restricting his movement, etc. Has anybody dealt with this issue with the older generations? Or other people?

Koreans have been swaddling for generations!
I used to swaddle my cousins when they were babies--20+ years ago! -
Oh yeah, people thought I was crazy to keep her swaddled during the day at first, then for sleep later on. They all shut up pretty quick when they saw her melt down, then immediately calm down when I swaddled her. You follow your gut and do what works best for you and your LO.

Hahaha yes. My mom kept saying she needed to be "free" - ummm she's 3 days old. Pretty sure she wants to feel safe lol

@prettylizy: Yeah, it was great a little while later when he was screaming and DH calmed him down by swaddling him.

The back to sleep movement in the early 90s brought about a lot more swaddling. Before, when stomach sleeping was common practice, babies typically don't startle as much while sleeping on their tummies.

This was one of the things that I wanted to avoid. MIL "knows it all" so I made sure to randomly bring up the interesting, new and recommended practices of infant care they have now. I might have inserted the reasoning behind it as well. I think the older generation just needs to be schooled a little bit before warming up to "new" ideas.
She never said anything, thank goodness. But I'm getting a ton of comments regarding her sleep now. *rolls eyes*

From our experience, those that had babies 30 years ago...aka the our parents generation are appalled, but those that had babies 60 years ago or so, our grandparents, did a lot of things that have been revived, like swaddling.

LO hated being swaddled so we didn't do it that much. My MIL always called it torture, etc!

I think Korean people typically swaddle their babies. My mom taught me how to swaddle LO when we first brought her home.

My mom taught me how to swaddle as well, but once she got older my parents would make comments on how i was restricting my baby and how sad that was. Grrr...i just had to ignore them. When i told my mom that i recently stopped swaddling LO she said, "oh yeah, because it was so restrictive?""umm no! Because she started rolling over." sheesh.

My parents were all about swaddling and my inlaws never said a word either way. I must have just lucked out!

Our korean family members never commented about swaddling but they did comment about carrying the baby in a baby carrier. They kept insisting I use a blanket instead of my Beco because they thought it would be better for her legs and spine development.
