There are so many kinds! The swings with the wide cradle legs, the more compact ones, the vibrating chairs, the bouncy/rocky ones, the rock and plays....
What should I register for? Downstairs, DH wants a chair of some kind to put the baby in while he plays video games and hangs out with her. Then we'll need something upstairs. What's worth getting? Some of them are too bulky to move from room to room...

We had a cradle swing (snugabunny) and the bouncer chair that matched. We could carry the bouncer around if we needed to. Upstairs, we planned to have the pack n play but she hated it, so we ended up carrying the bouncer upstairs for the first couple weeks and then just putting her in the crib.

We had the same swing as Zippylef and it was amazing! So cozy, quiet, it worked so well for us! Yes it took up a lot of real estate, but I think it was worth it. Moving it wasn't actually that big a deal either because the legs fold together.
For bouncers/chairs, we were gifted an infant to toddler chair by Fisher Price that vibrated, so I figured we'd be set with that... in the end, I soooo wish we'd bought a bouncer anyways, you can get them really cheap. We didn't use the chair much and I can't see us using it much in the future either. My brother and SIL on the other hand have a basic bouncer and bring it to family gatherings etc and it seemed so nice to have a little thing to bring along to rest them in to nap or sit safely if you're busy. Obviously I'd imagine around the house it being even more helpful.

I guess I'm wondering how a cradle swing like the Snugabunny is different from one like this?
Aside from this one being compact, anyways.

I'm assuming that it only swings in one direction? The fisher prices ones like we described swing forwards and back or side to side. I've seen other brands that have the smaller footprint that swing in multiple directions though. Ours also had the option for the seat to lay flat or in an upright position.

I vote snugabunny swing because it plugs into the wall!!
Rock and play because it can be a chair or seat

We have the snuggabunny chair and I would have found the swing useful. I like that snuggabunny has soft colours that aren't visually offensive. That was really what I was looking for when picking mine out. It also happened to be a nice chair. We used the vibrate feature a lot when he was wee. Now he's large enough that he can 'bounce' himself. I use it every day still and he is 7 months old.

I registered for the Snugabunny swing and the Babybjorn Babysitter Balance. Those were based on stuff I read on HB, reviews I found online, and the recommendations on Lucie's List.
I don't have a baby yet (as you know!), but based on what I've read, you'll want to have somewhere to "put" the baby on each floor of your house. Lucie's List refers to them as "baby holders."

The rock'n play and probably any bouncer would be easy to move from room to room. My LO spends most her time in the rock n play or snugabunny swing. She only likes the bouncer for a short time.

Alright y'all talked me into the big snugabunny swing. Since they're almost $200, I don't see anyone buying it for us, BUT there are a ton of used ones for sale on Craigsliat for about $90, so we'll take a look. Now I'm not sure if we want it upstairs or downstairs

We have this bouncy seat, it's very basic but has lights, music and vibrates, its very lightweight and I bring it from room to room with LO in it as it's not too bulky.

@blackbird: the snugabunny swing is amazing, you won't regret the purchase! You also might be able to find the older model for less--they just came out with a new one (I think it's monkey themed) so the bunny theme might be cheaper now.

So many expensive little toys for someone who will only use them for 6 months

@blackbird: They only use them for 6 months or so... but boy do they use them a lot in those months. That swing saved my sanity.
