I can’t tell you how important teeth hygeine is when pregnant. I saw the dentist 2 months prior to getting pregnant, and I had to go into emergency yesterday because I had a major cavity which means I need a root canal. Sigh!

@Mrs. Sunglasses: Oh no! Bummer I hope you're feeling okay...
I also had a cavity from pregnancy because my gums swelled and covered parts of my tooth that I couldn't reach with my tooth brush/floss.

I'm so terrified of this! I have troublesome teeth anyway and have to go to the dentist every 3 months instead of 6. I really do floss every day, I swear! I had X-rays at my last visit, though, and everything looked good, so I'm really hoping I can keep things under control when I'm pregnant (and will continue with my every 3 month schedule.).

Bummer.
I went every 3 months and still... got my first cavity! Got it diagnosed at 10 w pp, and filled last week (11 weeks pp).
It didn't hurt yet, so it was still small. But still--never had one before.
Your LO is stealing your calcium. Get checkups!
**Most dental insurance cover an extra cleaning during pregnancy because this is very common.

Wholeheartedly agreed!! I got a cleaning during week 7 of my pregnancy, and then didn't have a chance to go again until LO was 5 months old. Bad idea... I had three cavities and my teeth were an awful mess Ugh!

yeah it's an old wives tale about how how for every baby you have, you lose a tooth because of the calcium/hormonal issues that affect your teeth: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/24/health/24real.html
The article says 25% of pregnant women reported having dental problems! YIKES!

@blackbird: Never heard it. I believe it though. Sooooo bummed about my first cavity/filling.

Yikes, this reminded me that I cancelled my 6 month hceck up back in March due to morning sickness...never rescheduled! Need to get an appointment set up for after baby! ugh

@jessiejo17: Get it now. They can even do dental x-rays during pregnancy. (If you need them)

Funny, I just had my cleaning today. I was nervous but all is good! A girlfriend of mine always needed dental work when she was pregnant.

@blackbird: That was true for me I fractured a tooth in my first trimester and it was too deep, so they had to pull it.

I was having some major dental work done (including a root canal) just prior to falling pregnant and during my first trimester.
As long as your OB / midwife is ok with it, definitely don't put off any dental work just because you're pregnant!

I've HAD to put off dental work while pregnant because at 34.5 weeks, I'm *still* sick every day. I didn't think the dentist would be thrilled with me gagging on him.
and by sick, it's dry heaves, not actually..stuff..thank god, so no acid erosion here. I actually haven't been to the dentist in over a year, so I need to make an appointment for after LO arrives!
