and kinda freaking out about getting him prick-tested. he's been getting bouts of hives on and off for almost a year and we can't figure what's causing it. he also has wicked bad reactions to bug bites, so we'll see what the results are...i will be bringing several lollipops with me...
has anyone else taken their LO to the allergist before?

We just went two days ago! It wasn't that bad and DD didn't care at all while they were doing the skin test. They played her a movie so maybe bring that along in case they don't have it. Good luck!

LO went when she was 9 months old. They did a scratch test on her arm (6 pokes!) and she loved it! Well, not loved...She was very interested in what was going on, just watched intently. Didn't cry!

@Rubies: we did peanuts, tree nuts and sesame seeds. She is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. I haven't given her shellfish yet so I'll probably take her back at some point to test for that, too.

@Rubies: It was sad. Her peanut test swelled up a ton and the doctor was like "yeah, that's bad. We can stop the test early". Sad!

charlie got 80 pin pricks on his back for environmental allergens when he was 9 months old. he didn't cry and seemed to kind of like it.

@Andrea: oh no! i hope the nut allergy isn't too severe! i've had several students with bad nut allergies and i had to send one to the ER once!

@Andrea: yes, hopefully it will get better as she gets older. one of my students was HIGHLY allergic to peanuts and had to go to the hospital when a student who had peanut butter for lunch BREATHED on him. so crazy! but, he's now in fourth grade and has almost totally outgrown his allergy.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: @Andrea: Random story - my friend has a nephew who was deathly allergic to peanuts but by the time he turned 8, somehow outgrew the allergy. After several controlled tests, the doctors confirmed that he was no longer allergic. But in order to ensure that he did not redevelop the allergy, mom had to feed peanut butter (sandwich, Reese PB cupts, etc.) at least twice a month. This 8-year old boy had been told his whole life that eating this stuff was bad so when his mother tried to feed it to him he thought his mom was trying to purposefully kill him!!! Could you imagine how terrifying it must feel to think your own mother is trying to kill you??? When my friend told me this story I laughed but then cried.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: @Rubies: I'm so happy to hear that people do actually outgrow it. Apparently the percentage is only 20% of kids that do so I am not that hopeful.

Yep. My 3 y.o. had 21 pricks on his arms when he was 10 weeks old. Bring a good distraction while they are doing it and a yummy treat for afterwards.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: Yes, environmental allergies run on both sides of our families so our kids have a high chance of having some kind of allergies. My oldest had blood in his stool at 8 weeks so they pretty much tested him in every kind of way (prick, blood, GI specialist) to rule out other allergies outside of milk and soy protein allergies which is common for blood in the stool. He outgrew his milk and soy protein allergies (confirmed by all of his doctors) at 15 months and can pretty much eat anything now. It's very common for babies to outgrow protein allergies, I believe.
My youngest, now 3-months-old, has really dry eczema-like skin only on his arms and legs... so I'm suspecting he has something. I'm going to address it to his pediatrician at his upcoming 4 month check-up. *Sigh* Hope it's nothing serious... His pediatrician did say to keep an eye out b/c his CBC (complete blood count) at 2 months did show elevated EOS which means he might have food allergies. I believe it's different than protein allergies.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: You too! And don't worry, the docs will figure out what it is and then you can adjust to help with the eczema. I Aquaphor my oldest still after every shower and he's 3 now. It really helps a lot. Regular Vaseline didn't do much for him... Weird, huh?!

@erwoo: aww, thanks! his hives are actually all splotchy and swell...one time he got them so badly, his eyes were nearly swollen shut! it all went down with benedryl, though, so we weren't terribly worried...

Yeah, that's different than eczema. Dur to me!
