I have fallen in love with a crib skirt that is, in my opinion, a stupid amount of money for a decorative piece of fabric. Do crib skirts serve a real purpose? Can you help me justify this purchase?
It's from PBK and it's $124 here in canada... plus tax. so ridiculous... But I'm in love! Thoughts?

Depending upon the style, you might be able to repurpose it into window valances, so if you think you want to use it for the big kid room, it might save you money in the long run.

The crib skirt and sheets are the only thing that give my son's bed any interest. For safety reasons we have his quilt and bumper up in the closet. I was a FTM and spent the bulk of my money on the quilt and bumper... I didn't realize that they would be put up. Next time I'm going to spend money on the sheets and crib skirt and just skip the blanket / bumper.

additional decorative elementI happen to like less fussy cribs, but $125 for anything one likes is reasonable to me.

it's sooo beautiful in person. and would fit the room perfectly... i got a faux white taxidermy deer head with gold antlers for above the crib so i think it would be beautiful in there with all the gold accents i'm doing!@LaughLines: i considered getting my mom to make it because she's a great sewer but she's being a bit difficult... wanting to wait until after the baby is born and she's around helping out to make it. ummm that's not why you'll be coming to help out! so i'd rather just buy it for the convenience factor and then i'm not worrying about my mom's timelines. also, i've tried to find the fabric and i've found similar tulle but nothing quite as beautiful. i also worry my mom wouldn't make it adjustable for the different crib heights.

my best friend has offered to pay for half of it as my shower gift. so i might take her up on that! then it's borderline reasonable

I regret spending $$ on one. We had to lower the crib at 7 months, so we couldn't use it past then.

It's mainly decorative. I made my own, but I need to remove it now that I've lowered the crib.

@Smurfette: oh i should look into whether it's adjustable or not. for that price, i would hope it would be so i could use it at all crib heights!
so my bestie is splitting it with me for a shower gift. so post tax it'll only be $70 out of pocket. ANNNND i forgot i have a $35 left over gift card to one of the malls that has a PBK around here. so i'm totally buying it.

I loved my crib skirt, but she only started sleeping in her crib at 3.5 months and started standing in the crib at 6 months so we had to lower it. so it didn't get much use

@Pirouette: all the tutorials i've seen online were for adjustable crib skirts so i just assumed they were all adjustable! is there a way to hem it so you can still use it? that's what i'll try to do if the same thing happens to me!

if you know anyone who can sew a straight line and you can find a similar fabric they are really easy to make!

@Mrs. Lion: i know that's the smart thing to do and my mom is really great with a sewing machine... she quilts etc, so would have no problem with this. she's just being annoying about it haha... if you knew my mom you'd understand! so i feel like it'd be easier and much more stress free to just buy it.

@loki: the problem was the crib. it is very low to the ground so the only use for the crib skirt was when the mattress was higher and it hid the space between the mattress and the lowest setting. once we brought it to the lowest setting, there's simply no place for it to fall. I've seen cribs where the skirt can hang basically underneath the crib, but that doesn't work with our crib.

@Pirouette: oh boo! i'll have to get our crib set up and determine whether i'll be able to use it... cuz that much money for such a short amount of time seems a bit silly!

My only advice is to make sure it will work with your crib. I picked out a crib and bedding that totally didn't work well together. The crib is solid in the back with no slats so tying a bumper is impossible. It looks dumb and falls over which totally is a safety hazard. I know bumpers are a no no but I had it in there when the child barely moved. Then once the mattress was dropped you couldn't even see the skirt. And I had to drop the mattress very early on as DS1 was a mover from the beginning. Honestly, even with the mattress up, you could barely see the skirt.

@loki: @Pirouette: Id say most cribs that work well with crib skirts were the old dropside. I know itd be laying on the floor with my crib too. If it wasn't wouldnt babe be easily able to climb out?

@loki: We have a pretty standard crib. The crib skirt was great in the beginning but once we lowered it to the lowest level (at about 8 months when LO started pulling up in the crib) i took the skirt off because it was too long and dragged on the floor. I could have hemmed it but I just never got around to it. I am reusing it for baby girl though so I just set it back up. I do like the idea of turning it into a valence eventually though! I think the one you picked out would look nice that way

@loki: I would also warn you to look at the crib and make sure the skirt will be visible. A lot of cribs leave very little room to see the skirt.

@loki: I never had a skirt and never missed it, BUT since all you really do for bedding is a sheet, I say if you love it, get it. You will spend a lot of time in there and if it's going to make you happy to look at it, and you can afford it, do it. If you make a registry with PBK you can get 10% or something off closer to your due date. That's what I did for my sheets- literally my registry was two crib sheets and a quilt that went out of stock.

Okay I'm on both sides, I LOVE my crib skirt I got with DD1's set, however now I feel obligated because of the cost to use it for DD2, even though I would rather go a different direction.
