I am venturing into the world of shapewear as I need something for tummy control under a dress I am wearing to a wedding.
I looked at the Spanx Boostie Yay Slimming Bodice with bra top, but $120 plus tax seems crazy for some foundation garments.
Hopefully someone here has some advice on how to get the same effect for less (much less $$$).

I know a friend of mine really likes the tummy control/bra shapewear she just bought at Kohl's. She is going to wear it at her wedding in November. I think that she had to get it online though because they don't carry much of their shapewear in stores? Or maybe it was the opposite. I know whichever brand she got there, she ended up in a d cup, and she's small breasted, so that would be something to look out for. She said with a coupon she had it was like, $15?

So, I had this same issue two weeks ago! I wanted something similar because I was in a wedding, and the gown was a bit slimmer around the middle and strapless.
I ended up going with a strapless bra that was a size smaller than I normally wear (so it wouldn't keep slipping down), and a less expensive brand of spanx:
This brand works really well for me, and they're very affordable!
I've heard that the all in one (bra plus spanx) things are pretty uncomfortable because of the boning, and sometimes you can see the boning through your dress.

@kick641: @Pepper: thanks for the tip! I had seen some of the assets stuff on Amazon but wasn't sure if it would work. Looks great.
I defnitely don't want to have boning digging into me which is why I have avoided Spanx for all my life so far. Alas, the post baby belly has decided that it is inevitable.

Maybe something from the Assets line in Target like the High Waisted Shorts? Those tame the tummy and still give the same effect. I think I have the Slim Cognito spanx, which was $60 so not that bad. Any of the ones with the underbust or that stop below the bust are cheaper if you don't need to do anything in terms of your bra/bust area.

@MrsKoala: do the high waisted shorts roll down when you move about a lot or do they stay up pretty well? I am going to be dancing like a maniac and I'm a bit worried that I will constantly be tugging at them.

I think you have two options with that dress, you can do either a high waisted bike short or a high waisted brief. There are high waisted ones that have "loops" that you can attach to your bra, so they don't roll down.
Check out kohls. com. There are a ton of options, at all price points.

@plantains: They stay up! You can get one that has looped fabric that hooks onto your bra and then you don't have to worry about it at all.

@plantains: I find the high waisted ones roll down if you keep pulling them on and off
the ones with boning do not roll down.
If you are just looking for tummy control I would recommend something with straps that look like a cami and get firm something like this but you can get it without the bra

I could probably get away without shapewear but I have been working out and eating right, lost a bit of weight recently and I feel like if I see too much tummy/pouch in the photos after the wedding I will be disheartened. Silly I know.

Tina Knowles' tip is to wear panty hose one size larger than your regular size so you can tuck it under your bra. I have done a this before with tummy control hose and it smoothed me out.
The last Spanx product I bought was around $70. It's the one with tummy and thigh compression smoothness. Definitely my favorite piece of undergarment hardware.

Huge fan of Rago! It has the subtle boning and retro/vintage lace look as well! I used it for my wedding and subsequent parties and it never rolled down and was easy to get on..with a little "shimmy" of course lol
