@photojane: he's just started to mimic more clearly at 12 m - he was definitely saying tractor when we would yesterday, and yucky. He says of his own accord, mama, dada, dog, done, more, and ball. I think speech development varies the most widely out of anything, judging by the babies I see on a weekly basis at the play gym, etc.!

ETA we do sign as well, and he is consistently signing more, all done, eat, and milk. We're just introducing help and water now.

Lo might have mama and dada...but nothing else whatsoever. She is a little over 12 months.

@photojane: No, I'm pretty laissez faire. I don't really practice anything, I don't think! It's just developing naturally. We do read a fair amount, but he plays on his own for a decent amount of time while I read my own book near him too

Ok, on second thought, I DO practice "gentle hands" with him and petting the dog and my hair haha.

@scg00387: Ha - I do "gentle" a lot too and today she gave me a bloody nose at the library as she dug her nails into my skin "sigh"

She's almost 12 mo and can say mama/dada, baba, bye bye, hello and gaga (I taught her that turkeys say gobble gobble). But I feel like the mama/dada is inconsistent yet I do find her saying it more when she feels in distress and needs me to come to her. I try to practice words/naming objects with her a lot.

At 12 months she had 4-5 words and only 2 were consistent. They weren't really til right at 11-12 months though! Now at 14 months she has about 20 words and mimics everything. I think your lo sounds totally on track.
