What would you say if your kid asks what color he is?
DS randomly asked me the other day and I wasn't sure how to respond. We are caucasian but I felt weird telling him white. I didn't know if he'd take it too literally, because obviously we're not actually "white". I kind of laughed it off and told him he looked like peach crayon (from the day the crayons quit). And he agreed. When I asked him why he asked, I didn't really get an answer.
So what do you/have you said to that kind of question? I'm not really sure what is age appropriate. I know that conventional wisdom has changed and that you're not supposed to pretend kids are colorblind, but I love that right now he doesn't know really color is a way to categorize people.
On several occasions, other little kids (of various races) have said to their parents, "Mommy, she's brown." Well, yeah. She is. There's not anything wrong about that, and there's not anything wrong with kids trying to process different skin colors. We all do! I wish I had said "Yup, and I'm peach. And what color is your skin?" or something like that, but I felt awkward and didn't say anything.
