Not sure where to put this but are there any disadvantages to getting the target red (debit) card?
We have been buying stuff a lot at target frequently and the 5%off discount would probably help our wallet

I have the credit card and like it a lot. I also use the Cartwheel app in conjunction for even more savings. The only thing I hate is when you look at the online statement it doesn't list the items you bought, just that there was an in-store transaction and the amount. I am terrible at keeping receipts!

The only complaint I have is that it takes several days for the transaction to be deducted from my bank account - it's not an automatic debit. Otherwise, I love it. I've saved $180 just with the card this year, and I only started using it in April or May!

I have the credit card version of the red card and I love it. Like MAMACHIN, I use the cartwheel app to add to my 5% savings.
And I also have the same complaint - it doesn't say what I bought on the statement, just that I bought something.
Sometimes its good (like at Christmas time when I don't want DH to see if I bought him a present there!), but sometimes its annoying when I can't remember what I bought during that transaction - some purchases are groceries and some are not, so I budget those differently.

I have the debit card so it comes out of my checking account and I can't go overboard (even though I spend way too much money anyway). I like the free shipping and use in conjunction with the cartwheel app. I'm not sure whether it's related to the card or not but I also get coupons in the mail.

I have he debit version and love it! The 5% off is great and if you put it with the cartwheel app you can save some serious loot! Just like @littlebug: said- it is sometimes annoying that it takes a few days to debit from your account!

Have the debit card and it's great. Love saving the 5% and that it comes out of my checking (several days behind which is annoying but I deal). Definitely use it in conjunction with the cartwheel app to get more savings!

I have debated getting one because I do shop there quite a bit, but we don't really use debit cards at all. There has been lots of research showing that when you use plastic (of any kind, but worse with credit) you spend more because you don't have to be quite as accountable to yourself in the moment. I also know that Target (and other stores) are trying to build brand loyalty with these cards, and I don't want to feel emotionally tied to a store just because of the 5% discount.
I estimated how much I would save right now based on how much I currently spend at Target, and I am fairly certain that if I had a red card the amount I would convince myself i "could spend" there that wasn't planned for would more than make up for the 5% discount. Target is counting on that, or they wouldn't offer the card in the first place. Our budget is really tight, and I don't like to make things harder on myself than they need to be. Target is close to my house and we often go there on rainy or really cold days just to get out. I know I would be much more inclined to impulse buy if I saw a "deal" and I also had an additional discount, even if it wasn't something that I had planned to buy. I don't need that kind of temptation in my life.
There's a reason stores like this push these cards...it is because it is profitable for the store, not because it is a way to give people discounts.

I have the credit card version and I love it. I'm going to shop there anyway so why not save? I don't impulse buy so it does end up saving us quite a bit.
Now I need to look up the cartwheel up.

I have Debit Card and there is no drawback except for it takes a couple days to come through our bank account, but that doesn't really bother me. Otherwise it's free shipping and savings, it was a lifesaver when we were buying baby stuff (and will be again.) the day we signed up was the day we finished out our baby registry, we had a couple big ticket items left and we saved an additional $25 alone just because of the card.

@butterbean: The app is pretty awesome. I scan stuff before I put it in my cart and most things are usually an additional 5% discount.
Like others said, I dont' use as a reason to buy more, but I'm going to be there getting stuff anyways, so I might as well save a few bucks.
