Just curious what most teachers do during summer break. Do you take the time off or do you work else where or tutor? Summer school?

I take the precious time off and recharge. I feel like I'm going nonstop during the school year and the summer is the best time to focus on me and my sanity

I don't teach in a school, but I am in school. This year, I'm (working on ) working, but next year, I will be studying for qualifying exams-eek!

@LovelyPlum: what are you in school for btw?

Some summers I have done summer school or tutoring. The past few summers I have not worked. I tend to be a workaholic & this year caught mono in April. Right now I am still trying to recover from that. My house needs a deep clean so I need to get my energy back!
Usually I try to read, have lunch dates with DH or my mom (she lives an hour away), clean out my closet, help with VBS at church, go to dentist, schedule car repairs...everything that is hard to fit in during the school year!

I'm not a teacher, but my husband is. He's teaching a 3 week course for gifted kids at a local college and maybe some tutoring here and there. I'm excited to have him home with us and looking forward to lots of summer activities!

For the first 3 years teaching, I taught summer school for extra money. Then I spent 6 years traveling during the summers. Last year, I moved, planned a wedding, and taught 4 sessions at a private school's summer enrichment program.
This year I'm having a baby. I manage to stay busy.

For those that don't work during the summer. How do you deal with the loss of income? Or is it negligible since it's really only like 2 months?
I'm just genuinely curious!
Most "younger" teachers I know travel and the "older" ones work! hehe

@boopers I agree. I usually feel a little crazy by the end of school. Good to have some me time!

DH is a teacher and he's spending the summer taking care of our son while I work. He's never taken up a summer job. He needs the break! Last summer he did a lot of projects for the nursery and played a lot of video games.

@regberadaisy: in my old state, we still got paid during the summer (it was our salary spread over 12 months). In my new state, we get our salary paid over 10 months, so I just figured out the amount I needed to pay myself over the summer and put that away every month.

@regberadaisy: depends on the school district. My DH only gets paid the months he works so since school got out in may he won't get a paycheck again until the end of Aug. We just have to budget for it. I take his yearly salary and divide it by 12 and put money aside for the summer.

@regberadaisy I am only paid for ten months but opt to get it spread over twelve so it doesn't affect our budget.

@jhd: @mrskc: that is interesting! That's great that they do that.

I'm a teacher but in the early childhood sector, so I get paid less than my husband who teaches 2nd grade (our state is #48 in teacher pay...) I work over the summer usually, subbing at a daycare. DH gets his checks over 12 months instead of 10, so he usually doesn't work. He's working this year though, because we need to save up for my unpaid maternity leave in the Fall.

My sister is a teacher, she would travel every summer. That's how she met her DH, they were on a tour together in Asia. He lived in Australia so they would both travel together every summer, until they got married and he moved here.
Now that she's married she still travels some during the summer, but not as much because he doesn't have time off of work. She'll do some trips with her girlfriends here and there.

@regberadaisy: in the past, I've been a sub for the summer program at the preschool I worked at before I joined the school district. After we moved I stopped. I do lots of errands (like, everything that needs to be done annually!), fix up the house, visit family, and do projects - both personal and for school. I try to take professional development too. And, I won't lie, I take lots of naps.
We get our paycheck spread over 12 months as well.

I have a second job in the summer and I teach summer semester. I took a drop in pay to teach at the college (for some perks) so it helps fill in the bills as we adjust.

In the summers my life revolves around the tide times and I spend the majority of my day walking the sandbars. Bliss!
Our pay is spread out over the 12 months too which makes it easier I think. I have 1 week of work left then off for 14 months (mat leave starts in August...crazy!!)

My husband's last paycheck in June is rather large due to how the school divides the pay. This gets us through very well but he also wanted to make a bit more income this summer so that would go towards our mortgage/bills.

Summer break started 2 hours ago for me!! I have never taught summer school. Most of the time I relax, read, recharge, etc. I also travel, do home projects, and get ready for the upcoming year. This summer I'm taking 2 graduate classes and hopefully by next summer I will have a baby to keep me busy!
We also get our paycheck spread over 12 months.
