How did you teach your kid to tie shoelaces? DD1 is 5.5 and I’m just thinking about this now because she’s finally outgrown the shoes she’s been wearing for a year and a half. I figure it’s time to buy her a pair with laces and teach her. Any tricks that helped make it easy?

Two different color laces and the one loop method (versus the two bunny ears method). I bought a book with two different color laces but it taught the two bunny ears method which requires serious coordination!! Eager to hear other ideas
also interested in average age kids learn this...ETA: DD loves the step by step pictures in the book, the method itself leaves something to be desired though.

We had more luck with 1 loop than 2 bunny ears - basically, just showing her the way I would do it. Like most things I just waited until she was ready - so she didn’t wear true tie shoes until almost 7 but she picked it up really fast. Definitely others in her class knew before her, but I wanted her to want to do it vs me push it to make my life easier.
If you have a Nordstrom, the ones near us have a free shoe tying class the first Saturday of the month or something - not sure if every store offers it but I’ve heard it’s good.

I'm the interest of getting out the door on time, I waited till the last possible minute. D'S had everything on Velcro until he turned 7, at which point we went shopping for new shoes and... everything in the store had laces. So we had no choice. He grumbled so much I ordered some cute patterned laces online to motivate him to try tying them. It was still at least a month before he got the hang of it.

I bought the scholastic mickey mouse book (2 color laces). there's a story but not needed. And they teach 3 ways of tying your shoes and the third way, I didn't even understand how to do it.
I suggest you use a tissue box. Make holes. use 2 color laces.

I taught DH this past summer at 6.5. We struggled at first and I texted my mom he’d never learn! Her tip, put the shoe on his foot. We did this and within 10 minutes he was tying on his own.
Do one loop, not bunny ears. It is easier for some reason.
