Personally, I think 19 months is way too young to expect that. DS1 is 3 and on track with all motor skills/milestones (and even ahead in some) and he still can’t put on a shirt himself. He can put on pants and pull them down (elastic waist only) but that’s a fairly new skill. Like as of 3.
It’s always been my understanding that you can encourage it but it won’t really be mastered until closer to 3.

@SweetiePie: Agree, I would not push a 19-month-old to dress himself and would definitely not push potty training that early (unless the kid is chomping at the bit begging to start).

My DD is 2.5 and pulls her pants up/down, and puts her pants/socks/coat/shoes/hat on independently, but that's only been consistent within the last few months.

DS1 is 3 (38 months) and totally normal for motor function. He just recently (like in the last month) learned how to get his underwear and elastic waist sweatpants/shorts down and that's only after he mastered peeing standing up (again, another very recent milestone). He can zip up a jacket if I do the bottom, he can take off a jacket, he can put a hat on and off, he can take off socks but can't put them on, and can take off/on easy to manage shoes. He cannot take a shirt off himself and he can put his shirt on only after I put his head through the neck.

At 18 months, DS2 can take off his socks and shoes and unzip/squirm out of his sleepsack. That's about it. He can raise his arms when I take his shirt off and hand me his feet for socks and shoes.

I’m not sure why “able to pull pants on/off” is one of those markers on the “signs your child is ready for potty training” lists because I’ve yet to encounter a 2 year old who can do this. My youngest is also 19 months and on track and while she wishes she could dress herself, there is no possible way she could. Practicing with her big sisters clothes usually leads to more successful attempts (bigger clothes are easier to get on). DD1 definitely couldn’t pull her pants up/down when she potty trained at almost 2. Also consider that he’s not going to be going to the bathroom unsupervised for a very long time (probably until close to 2.5-3) so you have until at least then for him to get the hang of it.

19 months is so young! DD1 probably started working on it after she was 2, and mastered it by 2.5 maybe. At almost 3 she can pretty much do it herself with a little help for certain things.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Haha same. At that age he couldn’t do much. Now at just two he can pull of his socks basically. Haha.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It may be different if your LO is the oldest child in the family, but my middle DD (now 3.5) did actually learn to put on her clothes at a pretty young age, primarily because she watched her big sister do it. If you're interested in motivating your LO to learn, you could try letting him watch/hang out while you or DH are getting dressed on a regular basis, and maybe he will model what you're doing.
