I don't think the parents should have tried to force the girl to have an abortion. However, I don't think they should have to pay for the baby. I think this could be one good reason for having government assistance. It's there for a reason.

I do think, though, as her parents, they should provide the things to her that they would provide a daughter that wasn't pregnant, including a way to get to school. I know that even if my daughter got pregnant I would do what I could to help her stay in school to give her and the baby a good chance.

@cyndistar3: Not to mention the potential long term effects on her body that could be if she had an abortion. I know bearing a baby changes your body forever, but an abortion is way more risky. I'm glad to hear your parents were so helpful about it. I hope I DON'T find myself in this situation when my daughter is a teenager, but even though she's not even born, yet, I already plan to do what I can do help her finish school and help the baby have a great start.

@katiew92081: while I'm in agreement with much of what you said, there is plenty of evidence to say that abortion with a properly trained provider is a very low risk procedure. It was illegal abortions that killed women!

It should absolutely be up to her. Her body, her life, her baby.

But, IMHO, she also shouldn't be expecting them to help pay for her child. If they offer to help, fine. Good, even. But suing them to make them pay for your child? Not so good

I absolutely support her right to choose. How terrible of the parents to try to force her into an abortion. She's still a minor and at the moment I do feel it's her parents responsibility to support her even if they don't agree with her choices.

Her body, her choice but also her responsibility. I don't believe that her parents should be obligated to foot any part of the bill. If she's old enough to have sex, get pregnant and give birth, then she's old enough to figure out how to support herself and her child on her own.

@mrs. jacks: that study doesn't say anything about forced abortions, though...which is what this case would be. it's one thing if you made the choice on your own and decided it's what you wanted for your life. But, I would imagine that being forced to have an abortion would have a similar connotation to having a miscarriage or still born baby.

@katiew92081: Agreed with you on that point. When the pregnancy is wanted, abortion has been shown to be mentally distressing... But I mentioned that. Exactly why I support choice, because it would be equally distressing to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.

And that PDF is a compilation of a number of different studies, which is why I chose to cite it instead of single studies.

@katiew92081: abortion is not more risky than pregnancy and childbirth (except in third world countries). I agree that someone is likely to have some emotional trauma from a forced abortion (or a forced pregnancy), but childbirth is physically more dangerous than abortions.

I imagine the parents are responsible for the bill since she is a minor...? Sad story all around! Hopefully het parents come around and support their child and grandchild!

I support her right to choose. Since she is a minor, I do think her parents are responsible for providing her medical care.
