So we just took my 15mo son for his first visit to the dentist. I was worried cause I had noticed some buildup on his front teeth a few months ago, at which point I got serious about brushing his teeth really well before every nap and before bedtime.
However, DH does not brush his teeth before bed on the 3 evenings per week I am at work. I make sure to do his teeth really well before nap on those days. The other kicker is I still breastfeed to sleep and frequently during both nap and night time. We bedshare and it has worked so well to get us good sleep, or at least some decent sleep. Everything I had read seemed to point towards the fact that nursing at night should be ok for their teeth as long as no food remains on them.
Well sure enough, those yellow orangy (ew) spots near the gum line were the beginnings of teeth decay : (
The dentist was so nice, she cleaned them really well, while assuring me it wasn't my fault for breastfeeding, breastmilk shouldn't cause decay. Upon further conversation, she suspects is a combo of the carby snacks we give him throughout the day and genetics. She said she would just suggest the best oral hygiene possible for now, eventually they will need to be repaired, but holding off is better for as long as possible if we can keep them from getting worse. She did suggest night weaning though, and said she knows it will be a tough week but worth it as she did it with her baby (probably at a younger age).
So thats my big mom guilt of the day! I guess, any tips on night weaning? Luckily sort of, my work week starts tomorrow, so DH will be putting him to sleep, but I normally nurse him as soon as I get home at midnight (he wakes up around that time probably from habit). Should I just brush his teeth after I nurse him and then rock or cuddle to sleep? Starting either tonight or monday, I plan to start nursing earlier in the bedtime routine, before teeth brushing. Honestly, I have been looking for a push for night weaning. I just knew it would be hard and had to be up for it! And with this important reason, coupled with my guilt...I gotta go for it!
Sorry this post is so long, to anyone who made it this far : )
