Yes, LO had them put in a few days before his first birthday because of chronic fluid. Honestly, it was probably the best thing we have done for him in his 2+ years. The actual procedure was very simple. It was done at an outpatient surgical center and he was only separated from us for about 15 mins before the doctor came out and said everything went well. (Saying goodbye to him pre-surgery and waiting for the doctor to come out obviously sucked, but it was really very quick.) We were home about an hour after that. And the only after care we had was drops for a few days. That's it! The tubes made such a huge difference in his life. Within days, he was talking and crawling and hasn't had a problem since. ETA: LO is put under for the surgery. The doctor gave us the option to stay to see him put under, but the nurses really did not recommend it because they said it's very hard for parents to watch. He was very young and didn't know to be scared or anything (and has never had any separation anxiety issues), so we did not stay.

DS had his tubes put in at 14 months. Best thing we did for him! He was getting constant ear infections and the tubes have helped immensely. Since the tubes he's only had 1 ear infection, and that was when he was really sick with pneumonia.

It was a quick procedure. He was away from us for about 10 mins. They just gave him some gas and out the tubes in. After he was done we went to recovery and left about 20 mins later. He was tired and a little extra clingy, but by the end of the day you'd never guess he had any procedure.

No restrictions on what he can do. Just some drops for a few days.

R got them the middle of Dec at 21 months. She couldn't eat or drink before. But she did great with it. Got there at 7, surgery was at 815. Doctor was running late so it got harder to keep her happy without having anything to drink, but she did great. They allow one parent to go back when they put her to sleep. DH went, said he laid her down and the put the mask on her face. He was gone maybe 2 mins. Doctor came to talk to us like 7 mins later. Then while talking to him, the nurse brought her out. I just held her while she drank her water. We left 10 mins later. Once we got home and she ate, an hour later she was running around like a crazy toddler. Took a 3 hr nap, but that was the only odd behavior.

You have to put drops in the ears for a week after. We go back the middle of this month for her post check up. I am going to ask about swimming. The sheet they gave us said she doesn't need plugs for swimming but friends said their LO did.

Not even two weeks after tubes, she has ear drainage. But drops cleared it up in 3 days and she didn't need antibiotics.

@Charm54: We did it on a Friday, but he definitely could have gone back the next day. He came home, slept for a few hours and was totally back to normal by afternoon!
