I had an anterior placenta with DD1, and other than it taking a while to feel movement, it was totally normal and unremarkable. I had a low-lying placenta with DD2. It meant they did extra ultrasounds later in my pregnancy to keep an eye on it, but it moved in its own and DD2 was even a little late, again with no complications.

@travelgirl1: I am really confused by what you mean by "very close to the uterine lining", all placentas implant into the uterine lining. Do you mean very close to the cervix? Or to the uterine muscle?

Are you sure you don't mean placenta previa? Anterior placentas aren't a medical concern in and of themselves.

hmm.. I had an anterior placenta but it was at no risk for concern. I did; however, have placenta previa which put me at a risk of bleeding (if it didn't move) and having to have a c-section. I had a repeat ultra sound later to check my placenta and it had moved. This sounds like placenta previa to me but I'm no doctor!

@travelgirl1: it's when your placenta is too close to your cervix. my doctor also told me i couldn't have sex until it had moved

My friend had placenta previa. She was on pelvic rest for her entire pregnancy and did have some bleeding at 36w that resulted in a c-section. Her LO was in the nicu for a few days but is perfectly healthy!

Regarding placenta previa, my doc told me early on (around 13 or 17 weeks maybe?) that I had a low-lying placenta, close to the cervix. She didn't tell me to avoid sex, but that "we'll keep our eye on it" and that close to 100% of low-lying placentas migrate naturally to a safer position as the uterus grows. At my 32-week scan last week, the placenta was safely out of the way! Hope yours does the same!

@ineebee: my ob didn't tell me to abstain either.

@travelgirl1: I had placenta previa diagnosed at our NT scan. To be safe, I was put on pelvic rest, and told not to run. By my anatomy scan it had moved so I was cleared for everything. From what I understand, it's pretty rare for the placenta not to move by delivery, but if it hasn't budged by the time you get to 30 or so weeks they'll keep checking it to see if it is moving. I was told if it didn't move off my cervix it'd be a scheduled c-section, but mine moved well before that.

I was told I had complete placenta previa at my 20 week scan - also told to abstain, no heavy lifting, etc. - but a was also told it was very likely that I would need a c-section - like almost definitely. However, it moved and it was right around 34 weeks I was told I could have a vaginal delivery (which happened at 38 weeks) and everything went great! Hopefully yours will move, too!
