@grizz: We got back from the speech therapist today and she thinks that E might also have reflux. So we're going to feed him in the "highline" position, if he needs to be bottle fed. (Hopefully not too much longer!). We're also keeping him upright for 30 minutes after every feed.

My sister's youngest had reflux (think screaming baby x 6 weeks), and after they figured out a good medication regimen for him, he was like a different baby.

E was diagnosed last week. She would scream hysterically during some feedings. Sometimes feeding her sitting up helped but not always. She was put on Zantac a week ago and we haven't had a single solitary crying fest related to her meals.

I wouldn't do anything if it doesn't cause pain-most babies have reflux. But if there's pain, I wouldn't let that slide. Babies can associate their food source with pain and stop eating completely

@mslipgloss, oh man that's bad!!! I can imagine its hard to break that association! My ped was telling me she's had babies need IV food because their parents wait to long to bring them in. I felt like I should've brought it up a month before! Eep

@blackbird: My Ped just kept telling me that LO was an "active" baby and just wasn't a good sleeper . . . it wasn't until after speaking to another mom who had a reflux baby that things started to make sense and I sought out a Ped GI Specialist. I know nothing is a perfect system, but it makes me angry when I think about how many times I brought LO in . . . *sigh*

D was diagnosed around 7 weeks and started on Zantac. I had been suspicious that he'd had it for a couple weeks before that - he absolutely screamed during/after feeds (especially when burping him), he got hiccups constantly, he gagged/choked/coughed after eating (sometimes up to an hour later). I brought it up in the support group I was going to, but the LC who ran the group basically said "All babies have reflux" and kind of blew me off. My gut said this was more than normal baby reflux, but I let it go. A few days after that meeting, though, D spit up blood, and that was it. I called the ped and she called in a Zantac script. He is now 5 months and we are starting to wean him off. He was getting 1.25mL 3x a day, and now he only gets it at daycare at noon. He seems to be doing fine, and if he continues to handle that for another week or so, we will stop that dose, as well.

Good luck, mama! It's so hard and heartbreaking, but hopefully you find some relief soon! Keep pushing your ped if you feel like it's more than "normal" reflux. You know your baby!

@grizz: E was diagnosed around 6 weeks, she was an extremely spitting/fussy baby. We tried medicine, we tried diet, we switched to formula, and finally at 4 months old we did an Upper GI and they officially were able to see the reflux on the x-ray.

I'm one in the few I've talked too that actually had a baby who slept through the night with extreme reflux. My reasoning is she was so tired from being so worked up during the day that she would sleep 7+ hours a night from 5 weeks on.

We did jsut found out at 8 months that in addition to relfux (she still has it, and has never outgrown it) that she has EE, which is damage to her esophogas due to allergies. Listen to your mommy instincts, I did this when she hit 6 months & it was worse and not better. She spit up NON STOP & then it turned to vomitting. We went and saw a pediatric GI because of low weight and the vomitting.

D was on Prilosec first then switched to Prevacid which was better. We fed him held upright, kept him upright after and he slept at an incline.

He developed quite an oral aversion, but it's gotten tons better.

He needed thickened feeds to keep then down. What worked best was 50% Enfamil AR, 50% BM. We use Dr. Brown's with a level 2 nipple. He still refluxes from time to time but hasn't thrown up on ages, yay! Burping is key in keeping him comfortable.

His reflux is/was severe but he has ways sttn (first 4 hrs between feeds but we dream fed, now one 10-11 he stretch). He's 5 months adjusted now.

@grizz: I would definitely talk to your ped again. Seeing him spit up blood was really scary, even though I knew what it was. He was doing much better within a couple of days of starting the Zantac, and has been a happy little guy ever since.

He still spits up almost every single morning, but I think that has more to do with my letdown and him eating too quickly (gulping a lot of air) than it does with reflux, because it happens with or without the Zantac. And he's not screaming after spitting up - he spits up all over me and then giggles (punk).

We started Zantac around 5 weeks ! It helped him tremendously and he still takes it but is 5 months now and we are about to work on weaning !

My LO had reflux due to some food intolerances. My doc was against putting her on medicine though because she was what they call a "happy spitter" and didn't fuss when she spit up, and she was still gaining weight really well. What helped for us was, frequent burping during meals, keeping her upright for 30 minutes after each feeding (a PAIN in the middle of the night but makes a big difference), and having her sleep in the rock n play where she stayed at an angle.

M would burp or spit up and then start screaming. The timing didn't really seem to matter - it could be five minutes after a feed or five minutes before the next. Zantac didn't help her so we were referred to a pedi GI specialist who put her on Prilosec which really helped. After that she was a "happy spitter" (still spitting up, but it didn't bother her) for a few months and now she's grown out of the spit up and is off the meds.
