My lo is 16 mo and doesn't really talk at all. She has said mama and dada since 8 mo but that's it. She also does not answer questions yes/no with head shake/nod. I haven't been particularly anxious or worried and I'm still not, but we are starting to have a lot more tantrums that are clearly related to me not knowing what she wants. So at this point I'd really like her to be able to communicate a bit!
I've tried teaching her signs and she doesn't get it. And I talk to her constantly. So I don't know that there is much more I can do but wait (although if you have suggestions I'll listen).
Mostly I'm looking for other peoples experiences with their later talkers-- when did they finally start and how did you cope with tantrums in the meantime. It's been a long frustrating morning for both of us.
fwiw T shakes his head no and signs yes, but your swing story sounds like something that would happen here too. T can follow directions also like you described, but sometimes I ask him if he wants X and he shakes his head no but then cries because he really does want it. No is just more fun than yes in toddler world. Here's hoping we both get the explosion we are waiting for soon!!
