I love the water and want to introduce DS to swimming soon by enrolling him in waterbaby classes! I hear great things about cloth swim diapers versus the disposable ones. So let me know what all I need to know about them!
For instance, do I need to buy inserts for the swim diapers or can he just wear the swim diaper and be good to go? Any brand preferences and is their sizing true to size? etc. Thanks ladies!!

No inserts required...just throw the diaper on and go. They aren't supposed to catch pee, just poop. You can use the swim diaper by itself, or put a swimsuit over top. I'd recommend the brands I have but they're both made in Canada and, I suspect, not available in the US.
After each use I cold water wash and tumble dry on low, per the instructions. We haven't had any poops in them yet though

iPlay seems to be the most popular swim diaper brand where I live. No inserts, just wear the diaper.
Check the rules for the class you are signing up for. Some have very specific requirements on swim diapers (some pools prefer reusable swim diapers, others prefer disposable swim diapers).
As was previously mentioned, swim diapers are designed only to contain solids, not liquids. So we don't put on swim diapers until right we are at the pool (as to avoid accidents in the car seat).

I love our Imse Vimse diapers. They're super thin and snap on the side. iPlay is popular, but I don't love them because they're quite thick and pulling down a wet, poopy swim diaper sucks.

We have two Bummis and love them. It's quite simple, it's just a pair of undies that just catches the poo. I think pee is intended to leak out of all swim diapers? Anyway we put a swimsuit over it and wash it with the rest of our cloth diapers. Just be careful once he has it on, I've gotten peed on twice already

Another vote for imse vimse. We tried a couple other brands but these fit the best on my chunky-thighed kids.

We use Charlie Banana. Same as pp's, no liners required and I wash them with the rest of the CD's.

Thanks ladies! I'll look into the brands you've mentioned. You also say "put a swimsuit over it" so is he not supposed to just wear the swim diaper? I need to go out an buy "swim trunks" as well?

Applecheeks! As for suits-- it depends on what your needs are. If you don't need any sun protection, the swim diaper alone is more than fine (unless your preferences/aesthetics dictate otherwise).

@Alivoo01: we had the cheaper plain white iplay diapers that we put a swimsuit over because it's cute. We also had a pink ruffle one that I didn't put a suit over. So it's just your preference!

@Alivoo01: For a while she was just swimming in her diaper. It's just a style preference. Everyone thought my LO was a boy (in her pink diaper) so we just gave in and bought a suit. Purely aesthetic.
