I have a bunch of BG 4.0s and some Freetimes, but I think I need diapers that fit a newborn, right? Do I get prefolds and fitteds? Something else? How many of each?

@spaniellove: Do you have any BG newborn sizes? I may or may not have a bunch from some black friday deals.

Depending on baby's size, you can pull off the BGs. We used fitteds and prefolds and I HATED them - they were wet against lo's skin and that really bothered me. Maybe try BG newborn.

@spaniellove: I got some prefolds and prorap covers for newborn and premies. We'll see if I end up using them.

I just used disposables until I could use my small gdiapers. It's such a short time in my opinion it's not worth it unless you can get a service!

We used prefolds with covers during the newborn phase and it worked pretty well for us (we also used disposables for the first few weeks) We had a few Thirsties size 1 AIOs that worked too since they're pretty small. Once LO was a bit bigger we transitioned to our BG 4.0s.
Do you want to make the investment in buying separate newborn diapers? We chose prefolds because they would be cheaper - there are options to rent newborn diapers too I think!

We used prefolds and Thirsties covers during the newborn stage via a diaper service. I had zero problem with using the pre folds- we just had to change much more frequently so she wasn't feeling the wetness too much. Having the diaper service those first few weeks was such a huge help!
ETA: LO was 8lbs 2oz at birth and didn't fit into her BG Freetimes until 5-6 weeks. As far as how many prefolds, the service we used provided 100, with 3 covers and picked up for wash once a week. I don't think we every used all 100 a week though.

@dojo: How many prefolds did you end up needing? I do have some Thirsties AIOs.

Like @Ash: I didn't like the fitted diapers because they just got completely soaked. But if you're interested, I have 12 barely used GMD workhorses ;).

We did the newborn rental as I mentioned on the other thread, and tried BG, Fuzzibunz, and Tots Bots. I didn't have a true favorite out of those but it helped me decide that I wanted to CD and gave me a feel for styles I would like...I liked pockets as the AIO like BG Newborn take a while to dry, but the XS Fuzzibunz were hard to stuff.
If we someday have a LO #2, I'll probably assume he/she will grow rapidly like DD and use disposable diapers for the first few weeks, then switch to my BG 4.0 stash.

@spaniellove: What about Flips newborn stay-dry inserts? I heard you can use the inserts with any newborn diaper cover.

We are using Lil' Joeys and LOVE them!!! We have 28, and they last about 1-2 days. They leak sometimes (as she grows, the space between the snaps have made lose days). We really love them though, and we'll be BG AIO starting at 3 months or so.

We have a rental program. It costs $40 for 12 weeks, and we have 4 thirsties covers and 26 fitteds.
Maybe check to see if a cloth diaper store local to you has a rental program?

@ShootingStar: Are they the NB size? I was thinking about getting a few of these...would love to buy yours! Is it a boy thing that they get soaked? (You have a boy right?)
@bluestriped bee: Maybe they work like a prefold?
@danda: Did you have any thoughts on the Tots Bots? I've read a few good reviews and they always seem to be sold out.

I used prefolds/covers and disposables. I changed like 9-14 a diapers a day in the newborn stage and sleep stretches weren't that long so I wasn't concerned about soaked dipes!

@spaniellove: Yup, NB size. I also have 3 tots bots (size 1), 3 Swaddlebees (NB), 4 (I think?) Thirsties Fitteds and a bunch of inserts and covers. I have no idea if it's a boy thing to soak them, I think part of it was that we were letting him go too long because he didn't cry when he was wet and we were just so out of it and not in a routine yet.

@spaniellove: i went back and forth as to which out of the three was my favorite. The Tots Bots were my fave a lot of the time though. Cute , seemed to fit well, and kind of in between an AIO and a pocket so they washed/dried easily. Easier to stuff than Fuzzibunz, and lasted the longest in terms of when she outgrew them.

@spaniellove: Yeah, I think so.
I feel like an imposter on this thread considering I don't have any LOs. Take my suggestions with a grain of salt. #IFsucks.

@spaniellove: Hehe. That's true. Soon you'll be experienced!

@bluestriped bee: And I'm going to wish I'd been smart like you and stocked up!!!
P.S. - You will too, sooner than you think!

We used GMD newborn prefolds...considering you change them so often it was nice to have a big stash for not a lot of money. With my second LO I got a few newborn AIO as well but that was totally a luxury purchase.

@Baby Boy Mom: How many did you prefolds did you get and did you like them? I feel like the prefolds are such a love/hate thing!
honeydew / 7909 posts
@spaniellove: I wouldn't do prefolds if you're afraid of wetness. I don't think it has to do with being drenched but they're just constantly wet against the skin.

I think I might do a rental instead of buying more diapers....it's starting to sound awfully appealing!

We used BG newborns and kissas fitted newborns with covers. We liked both of them .

@spaniellove: We tried the Green Mountain Diapers newborn and the Indian prefolds infant from cotton babies. Eventually settled on mostly GMD newborns. I think 3-4 dozen is about right so that you're not rushed to do laundry every other day...we were changing 12-14 times a day the first few weeks, so this way I was essentially washing only twice a week- easy!

@spaniellove: I would recommend a rental, especially if you can find one that offers a variety of choices. When we did research prior to Lorelei being born, we thought we knew just what we liked and wanted to use. We were wrong. We ended up switching over to another brand entirely, and if I could go back I just would have started with that brand to begin with. Diapers are like so much other stuff-- babies have different body shapes, parents have different likes and dislikes... it's nice to be able to figure out for yourself what works best for you and your child. If I were buying diapers for a newborn today, I'd go with the Kissas NB (size 0, I think) fitteds x 6 for nighttime diapers with about three covers (Peachy Green size 0 covers), and then about 28-32 Peachy Green size 0 diapers for daytime. Lorelei was petite and had small thighs, and we were never able to get one-size diapers to fit her properly-- even now they aren't the greatest. Fortunately we had only bought one or two to try. We found that sized diapers worked best, and never really had any issues with leaks or blowouts. Plus she never got rash.

I hated prefolds/fitteds & covers! I use flats & covers now (flats & flips) and love them -- the wetness doesn't bother me and doesn't bother LO; they were just SO bulky when he was tiny. If I were you I'd buy a bunch of NB aios and sell them when you're done!

@spaniellove: what did you decide to do?? I'm wondering the same thing! I wonder if I could get some BG newborns from a rental?
honeydew / 7916 posts
@LovelyPlum: There are a number of places online where you can rent BG newborns! This was one place I found:
http://www.modernclothdiapers.com/newbornclothdiaperrental.html
I liked that you weren't tied to just one brand. I decided that since I already had covers and a few NB BGs and a wool cover it wouldn't be too much trouble to just get some NB prefolds. If I get desperate for some AIOs in the beginning there's a store near me that does a NB rental, just not BGs! (Wow, so many acronyms!)

@ShootingStar: Baahhhaha, I'm selling all my GMDs on eBay. Oops. I had good intentions!!

@spaniellove: thanks! I'm still a little undecided on getting the NB dipes, but I want to keep my options open. I also found this great comparison website: http://change-diapers.com/2012/01/newborn-cloth-diapers-my-opinions-after-a-month/
We're going to try AppleCheeks, so I guess it is feasible that we wouldn't need NB diapers, especially if baby is a chunker. I plan on having some disposables around, but I guess we'll see what we end up doing.

I used fitteds and covers, and they worked well for us! He was pooping ALL.THE.TIME anyway, so the diaper didn't end up staying that wet for long. I personally hated prefolds because the poop kept shooting up the back and out of the diaper. The Kissaluvs fitteds we used have elastic around the top and a kind of combed texture, or something, I'm not really sure how to describe it, that grabs the poop and helps prevent blowouts.
Obviously, blowouts were our biggest obstacle
