So my sister used to live in my dads two-family house in one of his units. She moved, changed her address with post office etc. today my dad and I visit her and he hands her a stack of mail that had still come to her old apartment. Everything is unopened except her W-2. He says that the new tenant thought it was hers and opened it. BUt it had my sisters name on it, and her place of employment on the return address. And she wondered why of all the mail that was was sent there, only the one with her social security number would be opened.

Honest mistake?

She's concerned about identity theft, selling of her information etc. (and yes, why give my dad the opened w2 at all and not just sell the info and play dumb, if identity theft was the plan)

Anyway what do you think? Any way to be proactive? I told her to just keep an eye on credit report. But have no idea if there's anything else she can do in case they are selling her social security number .
