Our son is due in two weeks and we are still without a name. Unfortunately the name my husband LOVES means our son would have the initials RAT. I think that is horrible, he thinks it's sort of awesome. Any thoughts??? I should note the R and A can't be reversed

I don't really notice or care about initials. So it wouldn't matter to me.

I think this is totally a non-issue. People rarely use their middle name. Unless it was ASS or FUK - I probably wouldn't think twice about it.

I think it's fine. It's rare that all 3 initials are used, and if he wants something monogrammed, he can always use the "rTa" type of monogram.
While I wouldn't say it's "awesome", it does remind me of the Rat Pack a little bit, which is kind of cool

I'll be honest this would probably be a deal breaker for me. But I would just changr the middle name.

I voted no, but I had a boss with the first and middle initials RAT. Instead of just using R Lastname, he signed everything RAT Lastname. Totally his preference, and I eventually got used to it, but I also thought it was weird/funny for a while. I say if you love the name, use it. Your kid will determine how to write his name once he's older.

I had a dream pretty early on in this pregnancy that we named our son Henry Otis, and only realized after everything was finalized that his initials would be HOE.
That being said, it's totally up to you to determine how much it bothers you... I think it would bug me too much, but I clearly have some initial neuroses to work through.

It's not the best but not horrible. I have a niece who is ASS. That's worse. No full monograms for her!

Not terrible, but I would probably look for another option. I had a friend in high school with a beautiful name, but her initials were STD... Yeah, no.

I think it might bother me. D vetoed my favorite boy name because the initials were MOM!

I guess it's different because I'm a girl, but my maiden name started with a T and my parents were going to name me Ruby Anne until someone pointed out the initials would be RAT. So they changed it so something else that ended up being AMT.

We thought about this when naming our daughter, and I probably wouldn't have done it....but honestly I pay zero attention to other people's initials. I have no idea what many of my friends' kids middle names are. Also,one thing to consider is that many monograms now (particularly for girls; I know the OP is having a boy) are written First LAST Middle, so in this case lots of monograms would read RTA, with an enlarged T in the middle.

Honestly, he will prob think it is funny. A girl might not find it as amusing, but I don't see a little boy getting embarassed by initials that spell rat.

I wouldn't. We used our initials frequently at work (to name our files, in inter office memos, etc) and i would not have been pleased if my initials spelled something like that.

I don't consider RAT to be bad initials... I mean, as mentioned above I wouldn't name them something that would give them initials like ASS.

I guess even if you use the initials for work etc you could drop the A and pretend to not have a middle name so he'd go by RT.

I don't think it is terrible, but it would bother me personally and I would work out a different name.

We were in the same position, the name we choose had initials RAT and it really bothered me but DH thought it wasn't a problem. We ended up changing the choosen middle name from Amelia to Emilia and now she is RET.
