How will you decide what's appropriate when your kiddos are school age? Do you resent having a school tell you what's appropriate (especially if you disagree?)

The school I currently work in is really lax about dress code, but unfortunately that means everyone has really been pushing the envelope and now we have an issue and the teachers/administration are figuring out how to "solve it".

Unfortunately, letting parents "police" their child's clothing hasn't worked, as clothing that is being worn isn't appropriate for an educational environment-- even basics, like a girl can't bend over to pick up a dropped pencil without flashing her butt cheeks, or can't raise her hand in class without showing her stomach.

And the dichotomy between what boys wear and what girls wear is so severe---all the boys are wearing knee or below-the-knee basketball shorts and baggy shirts with athletic shoes. The girls look like the went to Urban Outfitters to pick out some clothes to go clubbing in.

They are all 6th-8th grade (11-13 years old).

The feminist in me also realizes the clothes (or lack of clothes) is hindering the girls in other ways--our school is very big on exercise, and the kids have both PE every day AND they still get a "recess" after lunch for 20 minutes--even the most unathletic boys are out there doing SOMETHING--hacky sack, or wall ball, or tossing a football. The boys play frisbee and basketball and kickball....The girls just stand around in clumps, probably because their shorts are too short to even walk comfortably.

It makes me sad as a woman and as a girl mama. The shorts are all this style, for reference.
