I'll be honest, I just saw this movie for the first time.
Was it better in the 80s when it first came out? I can't help but laugh at the acting.

I've never seen it, but I guess it supposed to be pretty iconic.

Haha, I feel like it was always cheesy in that overwrought, teenage emotional way, but soooooo good. The whole confessions scene and Bender talking about his dad scene are totally cringeworthy. I still get goosebumps at the end...but I am a huge nerd for 80s movies

Awww, I love this movie, I have probably seen this, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink and St Elmos Fire about 100 times each.

Love this movie and yes it's cheesy
I can't speak for if it was better because I didn't watch it for the first time until about 2003 an I was already 14-15yrs old at that point.

I absolutely love this movie despite the super cheesy-ness of it all

So good, but it may help that I saw it for the first time as an angsty teenager myself. Think of it as my legally blonde or clueless. I thought those were pretty cheesy when I saw them! (still great movies though, especially clueless).

I love The Breakfast Club! I guess it's cheesy, but I prefer to think of it as a "period piece"

It was like the movies Mrs.Jacks mentioned and not that cheesy to me. Recently, I found I couldn't watch the whole thing or sit through any of the other great 80's classics. Probably because I saw them 5X each back in the day.
