From an early age, I would go out in the street in front of my house, or play basketball at the nearby court - and there were rarely parents around. But the first time I really went far from home by myself was on a weekend when I biked to a nearby shopping center... I just checked on Google Maps, and it was 1.6 miles from my house. I was in 4th grade, so I must've been 9 years old.
It's hard to imagine just giving 4th graders dirt bikes, and letting them bike all over town. But that's what my parents did back then - and everyone else too - and it was a great experience! I hope that I'll be able to give my kids that sort of experience someday... I'm sure the biggest obstacle is just in my mind!!
When was the first time you went far from home without any parental supervision whatsoever?
I was unattended before that but it was kind of an enclosed 6 acres and a safe area, I couldn't get too far. When we moved however I was completely unattended after my parent's divorce, and I would go on LONG hikes by myself in hilly areas. Crazy.
