Please tell me I'm not the only one who struggles with this! I would love to take the LOs to the discovery center, which opens at 9. Unfortunately the baby needs a nap no later than 930, which will probably last until 1130. If we go RIGHT when he wakes up, we would get there at noon and have a couple of hours before BOTH LOs should have a nap. OK, maybe they'll pass out on the way home. Fine. But then I totally forgot about lunch! Too early to eat before we leave (late breakfast today) and if I bring one there's no way DS will eat it with so many distractions. Can't wait to go until the afternoon naps are over, because the place will be closing!

Every day feels like this! I can't wait until the baby goes to one nap. Life will be much easier.

Will the baby nap in a stroller or carrier?

If it's a one time thing, I don't see the harm in going early to enjoy the morning, even if it means throwing the baby off schedule for the day.

I don't mess with naps, so here's my suggestion:
Will baby nap in the stroller or carrier?
Can you pack a lunch you can eat in the car?

@lamariniere: Not really, and it's not such a big place that we'd be doing that much walking to make him sleep. We're past those little baby, sleep anywhere days, alas.

I'm fine with throwing things off a bit more with backup, but I'm solo today and a skipped morning nap can make things hairy really fast. The afternoon nap isn't as sacred.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I was thinking something like that. I would have to make sure he eats before or after while doing headstands to keep the baby happy or something. Bleh.

I can't wait until DS starts preschool so he has more stimulation!

@Mrs. Yoyo: I hear you. This will be me in a few months.

Two of my friends have 2 kids, and one has 3. How thy manage everyone's needs and schedules is beyond me.

But I can tell you B baby wears a LOT and Ks toddler (17 mos) will nap anywhere..... Two things Chloe hated and wouldn't do!

Honestly I never took both kids places when #2 was younger - I would leave DD at home and just take DS.

Now my kids are 3 and 5.5 and its amazing! I love having the freedom to come and go and not worry about naps!

note: 3 yr old still naps but if she doesn't its not the end of the world (just gets an earlier bedtime)

@Mrs. Yoyo: ack, too bad! It sounds like a fun place though. @Mamaof2: even though I kind of feel sad about LO2 being my last baby, I am kind of looking forward to when both kids are mobile and don't need naps.

We didn't leave the house for probably the first year or year and a half of LMW's life!!! Sometimes one of us would take Wagon Jr. alone. Haha.

I will say, though, that when you DO get the logistics to line up as the younger one gets a little older, going places is really really fun

we pretty much stayed local until olive dropped her nap. we just went to the local playground a lot. she would nap in the stroller sometimes, but much better in her crib.

life does get way easier when they drop to 1 nap!

Yeah, I can't plan activities when I have both kids with me bc their schedules are just off each other. We stay local. Sucks.

DH works a lot of weird hours and we don't have a lot of help so I had to take both out pretty early....I think LO 2 was 6 weeks old? She is pretty good about napping on the go and I get restless when I stick to local stuff.

LO 1 doesn't need to nap anymore so I don't feel bad when we are out all day.

The boys were two when Lilly was born and they would go bonkers(and then in turn drive me absolutely nuts) if we didn't go places. I just took her in the stroller and hoped for a nap. I would also plan the drive around when she would need a snooze. Even though the drive wasn't a long enough nap it was enough to make her a little happier while we were out. The more I did it the more she got used to napping in The stroller. We have also done lunches on the go, either in the car as we drive or first thing when we get somewhere. I don't know if that helps any because my boys dropped all their naps at 1.5 and Lilly stopped napping at 2 so my kids are kind of a weird anomaly for naps. Like other people said too it does get easier when the baby drops to one nap. It leaves way more activity time.

@autumnlove: yeah, it was way easier when the baby was little because he would nap on the go pretty easily. But the consequence of getting him to consistently nap in his crib as an older baby is that flexibility flies out the window now! DS1 has reached a point where he won't melt down if he skips a nap as long as he's busy, so that helps.

@Mrs. Train: I've never tried a full-fledged lunch while driving. I don't see that going well DS will flip the first time he spills something because he's OCD like his dad, and he's RF so I can't really reach back and help.

I did get baby to take a stroller nap the other day at the zoo, but we have to be constantly moving and he only sleeps for 30 mins max! If we don't move, he'll just scream at me. Blah.

We're lucky that DS2 will still nap in the car or in the stroller; even though those naps are way shorter, it's enough for him to get by. I dread the day when he's no longer that portable!
Is there a zoo near you? We've found that zoos tend to open early and are good for really early morning activities before either kid needs a nap!
Edit: I just saw you mentioned the zoo. Duh.

I still did things with the kids solo when DD2 was on two naps. I timed her morning nap to the car ride. She woke up and we did the activity. We had lunch and then back in the car. I would try to keep her up so that she could nap in her crib when we got home. Then DD1 had quiet time and I got a break. Worked well.
