Has anyone gotten through their LO's infancy without using a pacifier? I'm debating if we're going to use them or not. I would prefer not to but I'm wondering if others had gone without?

I wouldn't have dared try not to! RJ as a baby was just super comforted by sucking. He still is at age 2 (he sucks his first 2 fingers on his left hand to fall asleep). He dropped his pacifier on his own when he found his fingers, probably around 3 months... not sure when we will break the finger-sucking habit, but the fact that it's a reliable way to get him to fall asleep on his own... I'd rather just let him!
ETA: all babies are different though! I know many babies who won't take a pacifier even though their parents try to make them!

When LO was first born and crazy colicky, I encouraged the pacifier but she never took to it - always spat it out and just didn't want it. She prefers her thumb. Now, I'm really glad she doesn't use a paci - it's just one less thing for me to not worry about.

my friends babies (twins) got seriously addicted to their pacifier and sucked it all the time and would throw major fits if they couldnt find them. They were nearly 3 before my friend was able to get rid of the pacifier and that scared me. So I plan to only use the pacifier for the first few months and then take it away before they get the chance to get used to it.

It depends on your baby. My nieces and nephews didn't like them, but my LO was crying all the time and the paci really did soothe her when nothing else would. I prefer the paci rather than the finger sucking habit which will take longer to get rid of. You can get just rid of the paci cold turkey.

We never gave our Lo a paci. She did well without!

neither charlie nor olive were into pacis. i only tried two kinds with charlie and one with olive, and when they weren't that into it i didn't push it.

I feel like I owe the people at NUK my second-born. Baby Y is a big comfort-sucker. At 6.5 months, he definitely does not need it nearly as much as he used to. Also, we've tried to only use if for soothing/sleep ... some parents just seem to give them by default.

Mine didn't like pacifiers. She took them occassionally in the car for about a month and then said it was crap.
I did nurse her a lot though, it might have helped space the feedings.

I'm opting not to use them with my LO. Well see how it goes but no one in my family ever used them with their kids so I think it will be ok... I hope!

We tried and she never really took to it. Sometimes at a young age (1 month) she would use it to help her fall asleep if we held it in her mouth. We always removed it once we got her laid down though so she didn't become dependent on it and wake up when it fell out of her mouth

My mom didn't believe in pacifiers, so I never had one and neither did my sister. Instead we had serious finger sucking (me) and thumb sucking (sister) habits. I didn't stop sucking my fingers until I was 9, and my sister didn't stop sucking her thumb until she was at least 5. In the meantime I seriously messed up my adult teeth and was teased relentlessly by kids at school. Because of that experience, I would much rather give my baby a pacifier and remove it from her life at I time that I deem to be appropriate.

We dediced we were never going to give our daughter a paci. And that lasted a whole 5 days. She is 6 months now and only uses it to fall asleep. In fact, this week she decided she doesn't really even want it then.
I have learned to never say never in parenting.

Our kids never took to pacifiers either but I would still have one available to have options on hand.

My thought is that if they want to suck and dont have a pacifier, they will suck their thumb or fingers. You can throw out the pacifier, you can't throw out their thumb or fingers. I was a thumb sucker and messed up my adult teeth because I thumb sucked until I was 9 or 10.
Ultimately you can get rid of the pacifier whenever you want to, you just have to be prepared for a few rough days while they adjust. They have to re-learn how to soothe themselves.
I'd rather avoid the years of thumb or finger sucking by using a pacifier and then later getting rid of it. Once they are a bit older kids usually won't start sucking their thumb when you get rid of the paci.

we did it without a paci! and we are really glad that he is not addicted to one because I've heard horror stories of parents not being able to break that habit!
instead of using a paci, we just swaddled and implemented a nap and bedtime routine very early on. good luck!

@MrsHotDog: I can't agree more!! "never say never in parenting" I love it.
As for taking away the paci instead of the fingers/thumb, when RJ found his fingers he refused to take the paci instead.
Once we have to worry about teeth (when his permanent teeth come in), if it's still his habit, we'll deal with it then.

My lo doesn't use a pacifier.
Before she came I said no paci. Then when she for here she loved sucking, she would suck on our fingers to soothe. So I thought anything to make her happy, and bought her a paci. She hated it. I tried different brands and no luck. She started sucking her thumb at 2 1/2 months and life has been great since.

My LO doesn't use a pacifier either. We offered it but he just wasn't interested.
